Mark Knutson

Mark Phillip Knutson, 72, of Ames, Iowa, passed away on December 5, 2025.
Mark was born on July 1, 1953, in Three Lakes, Wisconsin, the son of Erling Knutson and Dorothy Buckley. After high school, he moved to Fort Dodge to attend Iowa Central Community College, where he played football. There he met his first wife, Jane Hill, with whom he had two daughters. Mark later settled in Ames and worked at 3M for 36 years, forming lasting friendships. It was during that time he met his wife, Nancy Stroberg. They built a life together, raised two sons, and had just celebrated their 44th wedding anniversary.
Mark lived a life grounded in love, laughter, and connection. He loved nothing more than spending time with his family whether he was watching the Hawkeyes, rolling dice, or telling one of his legendary stories. He adored his grandsons, Luke and Ryan Fain, and his granddaughter, Madison Hargroder, and he was endlessly proud to share their photos and retell their funniest moments. Music was another lifelong passion, even if he happily stuck to the same 20 songs for the past 40 years. He also took great joy in keeping everyone informed about where to find "the best steak" or at least one that was as good as he ever had.
Mark was overflowing with charisma and truly never met a stranger. He had a remarkable knack for being good at just about anything-fishing, cribbage, golf, pool-and he was always ready for a little competition as long as there was something on the line.
Mark's legacy lives on in the stories he told, the laughter he sparked, and the love he gave so generously.
Mark is survived by his wife Nancy Knutson; his daughters, Marny Knutson and Carrie Fain (Jennifer); his son, Travis Knutson (Angela Hargroder); and his grandchildren, Luke and Ryan Fain and Madison Hargroder.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Erling and Dorthy Knutson; his sisters, Roann Moss and Nikki Bartz, brother-in-law Dick Bartz; and his son, Trent Knutson.
