Mark Lewallen Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Miller Funeral Services - Houston on Mar. 9, 2024.
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Mark Lewallen, born on May 20, 1956, who left us on March 2, 2024. A man of remarkable intellect and an immensely compassionate soul, Mark's legacy will forever remain in the hearts of those he touched.
He was preceded in death by his father, A.B. Lewallen; mother, Madeline Virginia Lewallen and brother, Chris Lewallen. Mark's spirit lives on through his beloved wife, Nancy Beth Heaton Lewallen; cherished daughter, Erin Elizabeth Steiner (Brad); devoted son, Sean Andrew Lewallen; precious granddaughter, Paisley May Steiner; treasured grandson, Brayden Matthew Steiner; faithful sisters, Mia Lewallen, Amy (Mark) Gendreau, Nan (Mo) Mosele and brother, Michael (Sofia) Lewallen.
Mark graduated with a B.A. in Psychology from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in 1983 and later earned an M.S. in Physiology and Molecular Biophysics from Baylor College of Medicine in 1991. He taught AP biology at DeBakey High School for Health Professions in 2003; leaving an indelible mark on a myriad of students. His passion for knowledge and learning was reflected in his career as an educator. In 2007, he taught middle school science and math at St. Laurence Catholic School. According to one student, "He genuinely made me enjoy math which seemed impossible." After retiring from the classroom, he continued to foster his love of teaching as he tutored at Mathnasium during which time he was awarded "Most-Requested Tutor" repeatedly.
A devoted Catholic, Mark was a parishioner at St. Thomas More Catholic Church. He also found pleasure in serving others by volunteering with his wife, Nancy, as a Marriage Sponsor Couple, Eucharistic Minister, Lector, and RCIA core member. His altruism and faith enriched those around him.
With his cup of Dunkin Donuts coffee in hand, Mark would indulge in his favorite treats which included chocolate and donuts. In recent years, he enjoyed visiting small town coffee shops with his coffeemate, Nancy. He was an avid reader with a particular interest in science fiction, especially the 'Dune' series. Mark will be remembered for his strong opinions, high standards, pride in his family, and strong faith.
Mark Lewallen will forever be remembered for his benevolent spirit, influential teachings, and the love he bestowed upon his family and friends. His absence leaves a void in our hearts, but his memories offer comfort and inspiration. May his soul rest in peace.

My Uncle Mark will always hold a special place in my heart... I always had a blast to go to Houston to see him and my aunt.
