Thomas Hedrick Obituary
Thomas Day Hedrick, M.D., entered Eternal Life on January 17, 2026, surrounded by his loving family and the caring staff of Houston Hospice. He was born in Nashville on October 17, 1946, to Grace and Tom Hedrick. The family moved to Houston in 1953 and joined Saint Anne Catholic Church. Tom graduated from Saint Anne Catholic School in 1961 and St. Thomas High School in 1965. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from Georgia Tech, a Master of Biomedical Sciences from U.T.-Austin, before entering Baylor College of Medicine to earn a Medical Doctorate. Tom completed his internship, residency, and fellowship studies in radiology in 1980 and was invited to join Houston Radiology Associated at Houston Methodist Hospital.
As a physician, he demonstrated quiet and profound competence, enabling him to dedicate his professional life to caring for others. His career reflected commitment, integrity, and a sense of responsibility to the oath of medicine, the hospital's reputation, and the care of each patient. Tom believed that technology should be integrated with medical practice to strengthen the value of diagnostic measures as used to advance research, treatment, and patient care, leading Houston Methodist to the forefront of radiology.
Tom's background in engineering and his insatiable curiosity advanced the practice of radiology by developing state-of-the-art CT, MRI, and ultrasound imaging, leading Houston Methodist into the 21st century. He served as Medical Director, Deputy Chief, and Vice Chairman of Radiology at HRA until his retirement in 2019. Tom received the coveted John Overstreet Award as Physician of the Year in 2012, given for outstanding service. Tom was respected for his gentle way of delivering even the most difficult news to patients and family alike.
Tom Hedrick's accomplishments were not measured only by his titles and awards, but by the lives he touched and the legacy he leaves. From an early age, he built meaningful relationships and lifelong friendships. Tom was a devoted brother, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and uncle who built a family strengthened by faith and love.
Tom Hedrick is survived by his wife, Sandi, of 58 years, his children, Kristin and Richard Morrison, David and Charlotte Hedrick, his beloved grandchildren, Katie and Sam Pierce, Charlotte, Philip, and Lizzie Morrison, Hayden, Vivian, and Charlie Hedrick, and his great-grandchild, Eloise Day Pierce.
Tom loved life and lived for the good of others; devoted to his faith and family, he served his church, the Houston community, and both family and friends with unwavering dedication. Throughout his life, Tom served many roles, but his favorite was "Papa". He loved connecting with his grandchildren, family, and friends, old and new, through travel, regular gatherings, and adventuring to the nearest park. He enjoyed weekly Whataburger, peanut butter and bacon sandwiches, and warm chocolate chip cookies with milk. This simple man possessed an enormous heart, and his love for others was only matched by the love he received from all; he will be greatly missed and remain forever in the hearts of all those whose lives he touched.
