Mark Massaro Obituary

Mark Massaro, a devoted father, son, brother, and friend, passed peacefully on November 6th, 2024 surrounded by his three children in the home that he built in Washington, MA. Born in Pittsfield, MA on March 4, 1958, Mark lived a life full of love, resilience, and dedication to his family, his community, the Yankees, and most importantly his children. He was 66 years old.

Son of the late Ralph J. and Eleanor Haskell Massaro, Mark was a 1976 graduate of Pittsfield High School. He continued his education at St. Anselm's College where he earned a bachelor's degree in Psychology, and later a master's degree in Educational Psychology from the American International College.

Mark served 38 years with the Berkshire County Sheriff's Office rising to the rank of Assistant Deputy Superintendent of Mental Health Services. A pioneer in creating effective programs for incarcerated and formerly incarcerated individuals, he championed mental health and substance use support, helping countless clients build healthier lives.

Mark's leadership in program and treatment development earned the Berkshire County House of Correction the National NCCHC Program of the Year award, highlighting his profound impact on corrections and mental health care.

Mark, in addition to caring for clients, was dedicated to staff wellness as well. He is the founding member of the Sheriff's Office Wellness Committee. This committee provides support for colleagues who work in challenging environments.

Working to help others with mental health issues and challenges was his passion and why work was never work for Mark- he loved what he did and the differences he could make in his client's lives. 38 years 'in jail' is a long sentence but Mark loved every day he was behind bars helping others find a path to a better future.

Mark is survived by three children, Jaryd Massaro of Los Angeles, CA, Alexandra Massaro of Keene, NH, and Marisa Massaro of Chelmsford, MA; his brothers, Joseph Massaro of Canaan, NY, and Paul (wife Kasey) Massaro of Weare, NH; his sisters, Patricia Lampiasi of Pittsfield, Kathie (husband William) Brown of Pittsfield; Karen (husband Paul J.) Caccaviello of Dalton.

Kathy,

I was so very sorry to read this! Please accept my sincerest sympathy on your loss. I lost a brother in March. It´s very difficult to lose a sibling and friend you grew up with. Your brother had the beautiful Massaro smile and I´m sure the Massaro heart as well. May God hold you all close during this sad time.

My condolences to Mark's family. I have known him for several years as I previously worked at the Berkshire County jail and sat with him at many work release meetings. He was a consummate professional and really enjoyed his work at the jail. He will be missed by all that knew him inside and out of his work environment.
May time heal the sorrow endured by his family!
