With hearts full of love and sorrow, we celebrate the life of Mark Lewis Mayes Sr., a devoted husband,
father, grandfather, and friend. Born on May 3, 1965, in Orange, New Jersey, to George and Mary Mayes, Mark's life was a testament to resilience, ambition, and unwavering devotion to those he loved. He peacefully entered eternal rest on March 21, 2025, at his home in Morristown, New Jersey.
Mark was a proud graduate of Kean University and spent his career shaping the future of Human Resources and information technology in healthcare. He began his professional journey at Atlantic Health System, a global leader in medicine, before continuing his impact as an Assistant Director of Information Technology Systems at University Hospital.
His work was more than a job-it was a calling, one that combined his sharp intellect with his innate desire to improve the world around him. But Mark's greatest mission in life was his family. In 1985, he married his soulmate, Michele Mary McGee, and together they built a life filled with love, laughter, and adventure. Their union brought forth two incredible sons, Mark Jr. and Jeremy, and later, the joy of two cherished grandchildren, Milan and Maxwell. His family was his heartbeat, his reason for striving, and his greatest source of pride.
A man of vision and determination, Mark fulfilled his dream of securing a beautiful home for his family in Morristown. A goal that he set to for himself and achieved with his family. Mark brought life and light into every room he entered and every person he encountered. His infectious spirit could brighten even the darkest days.
He was always a shining star at any gathering. Words cannot fully capture the magnitude of his presence on the lives that he touched. He was a mentor, a coach, and a guiding light. Speaking with him or simply running into him was the highlight of one's day. His words of wisdom and humor not only uplifted but empowered. He had an uncanny ability to bring a smile to your face and laughter to your heart.
Mark's passions extended beyond his professional and family life. He was drawn to the rhythm of the ocean, finding peace in its vastness and power. The crashing waves, the salty air, and the boundless horizon mirrored his own deep and adventurous spirit. He also had an undeniable love for the pulse of house music-the hypnotic beats and electrifying energy were the soundtrack to his life, fueling his soul and keeping his spirit young. Atlantic City was his playground, with the Borgata standing as his home away from home. Whether sitting at the card table or simply soaking in the vibrant energy of the casino, he embraced the thrill of the game and the camaraderie of fellow players. His carefree attitude and effortless charm made him a presence that could never go unnoticed. Mark truly was and always will be a remarkable presence.
Mark was preceded in death by his parents, George and Mary Mayes. He leaves to cherish his memory by his wife of thirty-nine years, Michele, his sons, Mark Jr. and Jeremy, and his grandchildren, Milan and Maxwell. He is also survived by his siblings: Valerie Mayes-Charles, George S. Mayes, Jr., Debbie Townsend, Michael Mayes, and Marty Mayes. Sisters-in-law Leslie Mayes, Sheri, Veronica Mayes, Celeste McGee and his brothers- in-law, Carrell Townsend and James McGee. Mother-in-law, Agnes McGee.
He is also survived by his beloved nephew, Malik, who was like a son to him, and whose presence brought joy and love to his life. Mark leaves behind countless friends, relatives, and members of his extended family who will forever hold him close in their hearts.

Mark took me under his wing while working at Atlantic Health. We worked on a six sigma project and he was an incredible mentor. We continue to stay in touch after. Last month we spoke for a bit and Mark reminded me life is short and to be happy, family is everything. My deepest condolences.
