Mark James Schmidt, age 82, of Bloomington, passed away peacefully on February 23, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family. He was born on September 11, 1943, in
St. Paul, MN, to Harold and Elaine Schmidt.
Mark was proud to have served his country as a member of the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam War, a commitment that remained an important part of his identity throughout his life. He was known for his enthusiasm for life, strength, dedication to family, and quiet pride in those he loved.
Mark valued hard work and built a successful career over many years. His professional journey included roles at Data Documents and Pioneer Paper, as well as founding his own business, Jobline. He concluded his career at CitiCargo & Storage, retiring at the age of 76, a milestone that reflected his strong work ethic and commitment.
Mark had a lifelong love for sports, especially hockey. He played hockey from a young age through his high school years and was very proud to be named to the 1960 All-Suburban Team. He remained a devoted fan of the sport throughout his life. He also enjoyed watching many other sports and cheering on his favorite teams. Mark was generous, thoughtful, and loved entertaining family and friends, creating memories through gatherings and time spent together. He enjoyed his Corvettes, loved fishing and vacationing, especially his trips to Alaska, Mexico, and sailing in the Virgin Islands.
He is survived by his loving wife, Mary Ellen; his daughters, Kristie (Brian) Kiecker and Treena (Jim) Haase; and his cherished grandchildren, Connor, Cole, and Carson Kiecker, and Megan and Jessica Haase. He is also survived by the large extended family he gained through his marriage to Mary Ellen, including her five children, nine grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren, along with many relatives and dear friends who will deeply miss him and carry his memory in their hearts.
Mark was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Elaine Schmidt; his sister, Jackie Petrowske; and his brother, Bob Schmidt.
A Celebration of Life will be held Monday, March 16, at Willwerscheid Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 1167 Grand Avenue, with visitation at 10:00 a.m. and the service at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Fort Snelling National Cemetery.
Memorials are preferred to N.C. Little Memorial Hospice, who provided excellent care, kindness, and compassion to Mark and his family.
Mark's family will remember him for his service, his love, and the legacy he leaves behind in the lives of his children and grandchildren. While he will be deeply missed, they rejoice in the promise that they will see him again.
