Arnold "Mark" Shalda, age 65, of Onaway, died unexpectedly on Sunday, October 12, 2025. Born in Detroit on November 2, 1959, he was the son of Arnold G. and Wanda (Fraiser) Shalda. Mark honorably served his country as a proud veteran of the U.S. Army. During his time in the military, he was stationed in Hawaii.
Mark dedicated his professional life to the culinary arts, working as a chef in numerous restaurants across Northern Michigan. He worked in the communities of Petoskey, Cheboygan, Mackinaw City, and most recently at the Black Lake Golf Course near Onaway.
A minimalist by nature, Mark found true happiness in life's simple pleasures. Of these, fishing stood out as his favorite pastime. Whether casting a line from the shore or a boat, Mark was in his element and fully at peace when fishing. His reputation for skill was well known among family and friends and Mark could "out fish" even the best anglers.
Mark faithfully began each day by watching the morning news, staying informed about current events and happenings. He loved playing the daily Michigan Lottery and enjoyed listening to music as well as spending time on his computer. Mark was a reserved and private individual who valued his solitude. Preferring quiet moments and the tranquility of nature, Mark often sought solace in the outdoors. He was a kind soul who would give the shirt off his back to help someone in need.
Mark shared a deep bond with his family and was especially close to his brother, Ty. He had great affection for his nieces and nephews, cherishing the time spent with them. Mark's love extended to his pets, considering his cats and dog to be important members of his family.
He is survived by his sister, Harriat (Richard) Allen of Perry; his brother, Ty Shalda of Onaway; and his nieces and nephews. Mark was preceded in death by his son, Arnold Shalda, and by his parents.
In accordance with Mark's wishes, no formal services will be held.
In remembrance of Mark, his family invites those who wish to honor his memory to consider donating to the Cheboygan County Humane Society. This meaningful gesture reflects Mark's love and compassion for animals throughout his life.
