Carolyn V. Mousseau, age 90, of Black River (Cheboygan), died peacefully at home on Saturday, October 11, 2025. Born in Detroit on July 4, 1935, Carolyn was one of three daughters born to Clarence and Veronica (Marcheniak) Wassell. Raised in Detroit, after graduation from high school Carolyn went on to become a nurse and worked at Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak for several years.
On November 28, 1958, Carolyn married James R. Mousseau at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Livonia. Following the birth of their first child, Carolyn chose to leave her nursing career to devote herself fully to her family as a homemaker and mother. Carolyn and Jim settled in Westland, where they built a loving home and raised their daughter along with five energetic sons.
Carolyn's parents owned a cottage on the Black River for many years, providing the family with a cherished retreat where they spent weekends and much of the summer enjoying all that Northern Michigan had to offer. When her husband retired in 1990, Carolyn and Jim found the decision to move north a simple one, choosing to spend their retirement on the banks of the Black River. Surrounded by the tranquil beauty of nature, Carolyn embraced the peaceful river life and the relaxed atmosphere of Northern Michigan, which perfectly suited her love of the outdoors.
Carolyn found great joy in quietly watching the deer, birds, and other wildlife that frequented her property and the nearby woods. Her keen interest in the natural world was evident in her extensive knowledge of plants, birds, and other animals. An avid flower gardener, Carolyn devoted time and care to cultivating vibrant blooms around her home. She cherished moments of relaxation, whether simply watching the gentle flow of the river or joining her family on pontoon boat rides up the river to Black Lake. Always up for watching a game, Carolyn was a devoted and lifelong fan of the Detroit Tigers.
Devoted to her Catholic faith, Carolyn found comfort and strength in prayer, especially the rosary, which she turned to during challenging times in her life. Her steadfast devotion was evident in her long-standing membership at St. Paul Catholic Church in Onaway.
Not only was Carolyn a devoted mother to her own children, but her nurturing spirit extended far beyond her immediate family. She naturally welcomed and cared for others, embracing all those who came into her home with warmth and kindness. Friends of her children often referred to her as "mom." Carolyn's ability to make everyone feel loved and included was a hallmark of her character, and her home was always a place where friends felt accepted.
Carolyn will be fondly remembered for her unwavering positive outlook on life. She consistently radiated happiness, greeting those around her with a friendly demeanor and a genuine smile. Her determination was evident in all she did, and she approached challenges with a feisty spirit and a touch of sass that endeared her to others. Blessed with ninety years and surrounded by a loving family, Carolyn remained grateful for the many joys and blessings she experienced throughout her life.
Surviving Carolyn are her six children, Jaqueline Russom of Charlevoix, Stephen of Mancelona, Ronald of Cheboygan, John (Susanne) of Alba, Patrick of Alanson, and Joseph (Sally) of Pinckney; four grandchildren, four great grandsons, four great granddaughters, and one great, great grandchild; sister, Cynthia Spence of Gladwin; as well as nieces, nephews and her little dachshund, Zoe.
Carolyn was preceded in death by her husband of fifty-seven years, Jim Mousseau on May 17, 2016; her sister, Claudia; and her parents.
