Mark Sherwood, originally of Quincy, Illinois and a long-time resident of Rockford, passed away surrounded by family and love. Mark was a devoted father, a steady friend, and a generous neighbor whose presence made life easier and warmer for everyone around him.
Born Joan Maas and Jack Sherwood and raised in Quincy, Mark carried the values of kindness, humility, and hard work throughout his life. He made his home in Rockford, where he built lasting friendships, raised his daughter, and became deeply rooted in the community he cared about so much. Whether it was lending a hand, fixing something that needed repairing, or simply showing up when someone needed support, Mark was always there. He didn't just talk about being a good person-he lived it every day.
Mark's greatest pride and joy was his daughter, Melissa. He was not only her father, but her guide, her teacher, her steady place in a changing world. Their bond was one of deep respect, humor, and unconditional love. Mark gave his daughter the kind of love that shapes a life, and his presence will continue to live through her.
To his friends and neighbors, Mark was the person you could count on-quiet in acknowledgment, gentle in action, and unwavering in loyalty. He was the first to help, the last to ask for anything in return, and the kind of man who made a neighborhood feel like home.
Mark leaves behind a legacy of kindness, service, and love. His life was a testament to what it means to show up for others with your whole heart.
He will be deeply missed, always remembered, and forever loved.
He is survived by his daughter, Melissa; siblings, Theresa Shipe, George Dreyer, Joe Dreyer, Maurice Dreyer Jr, Marilyn Crim and Maurine Holt. He was preceded in death by parents, his brother David Sherwood and maternal and paternal grandparents.
Visitation will be from 12:00 to 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 25, 2025 at Fred C. Olson Chapel, 1001 Second Ave., Rockford, IL and from 9:00 to 9:45 a.m. on Wednesday, November 26, 2025 at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, 2223 Saint Anthony Rd, Quincy, IL 62305. Mass will follow at 10:00 a.m. at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church. Burial in Saint Anthony of Padua Parish Cemetery, Quincy, IL.
