Mark Robert Smith

Mark Robert Smith, 62, of Johnsburg, passed away peacefully on Monday, January 26, 2026, at his home.

He was born on Tuesday, September 3, 1963, in Amsterdam, the son of the late Robert and Norma (Hubschmitt) Smith. Mark graduated from Canajoharie High School in 1981 and then later earned his bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from Clarkson University. After college, Mark joined the Army, serving from 1986 to 1989 and attaining the rank of Lieutenant. He was most recently the president of Global Pharma Solutions, LLC, in Pharmaceutical Research Development, but before that, he worked in Japan as a business development and project manager.

Mark served as the Town Supervisor for Johnsburg. He was the author of a couple of books, "To Form a Perfect Union," "The Forgotten American Social Contract," and Doing Business in Japan. In his spare time, he enjoyed playing his guitar, studying history, and being outdoors.

Survivors include: his mother, Norma; his children, Abraham Alexander Smith, Yuri Smith, and Ami Smith; his brother, David F. Smith; his sister, Polly J. Smith; his long-time friend, Barbara Corrigan, and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Visiting hours will be from 10-11:00 AM on Saturday, January 31st, with a funeral service to follow at 11:00 AM at the Houghtaling and Hanley Funeral Home, 20 Otsego Street, Canajoharie, NY. He will be laid to rest at the Canajoharie Falls Cemetery with military honors.
