Mr. Mark William Thompson Jr., "Mark Jr", of Chester, Virginia (formerly of
Petersburg, Virginia) peacefully transitioned from labor to reward on August 12, 2025, at St. Francis Medical Center in his baby girl's arms.
Mark graduated with the Petersburg High School Class of 1974 and served in the United States Marine Corps for eight years. Following his military service, he worked for many years at A.A. Tucker's Funeral home, and was later employed with the Henrico Sheriff's Office, Vendor's Supply, Southside Regional Medical Center and the Chesterfield Trading Company until his health began to decline. He was also a member of the Trinity Missionary Baptist Church of God in Christ.
Mark was a very laid-back happy man. He loved sports and proudly supported his hometown team, the Petersburg Crimson Wave, for many years. He loved his family and friends and found great joy from the warmth and togetherness of every gathering.
Mark was preceded in death by the love of his life, Tanya Mitchell Thompson – "Red"; parents, Maude Blakes Whitaker, Mark W. Thompson, Sr. and Catherine Thompson.
Mark leaves to cherish his memories, one son, Mark W. Thompson III; daughters Monika Mitchell, and the apple of his eye, Marshae' Thompson; grandchildren whom he adored-referring to them as his "Buddy's", Marzhan Thompson and Qa'Ron Bannister; sister, Jill Winfield; three sisters-in-law, Ruth Jones, Dr. Patricia Myers (Dr. Otha) and Janice Brickell; two brothers-in-law, Retired Lt. Col Gerald Mitchell (Patricia), and Albert Mitchell (Sandra);nieces and nephews, Devin and Brandon Winfield , Theolette Ledbetter , Gennise Smith, Sharon Mitchell, James Mitchell, Jr., Pamela Smith (Carlos Orr), Cathy Chapman (David), Sheryl White (Andrew Jr.),Charles Smith, Jr. ,Lisa Vaughan (Jerry), Shawn Mitchell ,John Applewhite, Kenya Johnson (James), Derek Mitchell, Michelle Gordon (Chad),Brian Mitchell (Christina),Nikia Jones, Gerald Mitchell, Jr. (Ifeoma), Michael Mitchell and Jeffrey Dodson, Jr.; godchild, Michael Mitchell and a host of great nieces and nephews, cousins, close neighbors, and friends; especially, bonus son/ in home barber, Cory Jackson,; cousins/ siblings, Lydia Taylor Batson, Terri Ann Taylor, Robert Taylor Jr.,(Beth) Monique Taylor, Sylvia Skinner, best friend, Wayne "Peanut" Walker, Ronald Revish, Charles Wiggins, Eugene Hollins, Stanley Taylor, Charles "Smitty" Smith (Barber), Bishop Jeffrey L. Dodson, Sr., and Traci Dodson, Kelvin Dixon, Rev. Antonio Tucker, Rev. Tyrone Jackson Jr., Monty Wran, Malinda Blowe, Bernard Wilson and his homeboys from Birdsville and the 1973-1974 Petersburg Crimson Wave Basketball Team.
A public viewing will be held from 4 pm to 8 pm on Thursday, August 21, 2025 at J.L. Dodson and Sons Funeral Establishment in
Petersburg, Virginia.
Celebration of life service for Mr. Mark W. Thompson, Jr., will be held on Friday, August 22, 2025 1pm at Trinity Missionary Baptist Church Of God In Christ 233 Halifax St.
Petersburg, Virginia, Bishop Jeffrey L. Dodson, Sr. Eulogist . Interment will follow in the Wilkerson Memorial Cemetery 611 S. Crater Road Petersburg Virginia with full Military Honors.
The family is asking relatives and friends to assemble at the church on day of service at 12:45 pm.
