On Thursday, October 23, 2025, God called Samuel Leon Manson home. Sam peacefully transitioned into eternal rest at Virginia Commonwealth University – Medical College of Virginia in Richmond, Virginia, following a brief illness.
Sam was born in Richmond, VA on December 17, 1964, and raised in Church Road, Virginia (Dinwiddie County) where he was educated in the Dinwiddie County Public School System. Sam enjoyed playing baseball, softball, and hunting. He particularly loved playing Little Leage Baseball in the Babe Ruth Baseball League. Sam found his niche in playing football. He played football from little league through high school and was an outstanding football player. Many people say Sam was one of the Legends of the Dinwiddie Generals Football team, as he played both Line Backer and Guard positions. Later in life Sam enjoyed daily fishing, and the immense fellowship with his Carriage House friends. Sam will be lovingly remembered for his signature catch phrase when he was excited, "Cootie-Coo"!
Samuel was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas Edward Manson and Brenda Ann Gee Manson; his brother, David Larnes, and his paternal aunt, Ollie Manson.
Sam leaves to cherish his memory, his devoted children, Winters Manson (Sylvia), Jacobi "Jay" Nicholas (Lynette), and Juvonti "Von" Nicholas Sr. (Donna). He was the proud grandfather of Tanesha, Arica, Angel, Ronald Jr., Heaven, Jaiden, Raymel, Rondale, Zoe, Juvonti Jr., and Jakhari, all of whom brought immense joy to his life. Sam's family includes his siblings, Deborah T. Joyner (Alonzo), Tilden M. Manson (Aleisha), Tonyia M. Pender (Charles), and Crissy Smith; his paternal uncle, Franklin Manson; and paternal aunt, Dallas Booker; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends, including a devoted friend, Mr. West of Petersburg, and a devoted nephew, Mario Gordon, Jr.
