Mark Wilson Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 9, 2024.
Salinas - Mark Edward Wilson, who was known by his stage name Mark Edward, died Sunday, August 4, 2024 at home after a year's long battle with prostate cancer. Mark was born May 19, 1951 in Los Angeles County to William Edward Wilson and Betty Jean Schaeffer. He was raised in Rancho Palos Verdes and lived in San Pedro until he moved to Salinas in 2019. Mark graduated from Palos Verdes High School in 1970 then earned a BA of Fine Arts in 1974 from California Institute of the Arts. In his teenage years Mark was in various Dada and Punk bands: Rat Salad, The Techno-Cats and ZaSu Pits and the Enema Dog Review. His grandfather George Schaeffer interested Mark in magic which led to a life-long career. Eventually after becoming bored with standard magic he gravitated to mentalism and educated animal acts and became a performer at Hollywood's Magic Castle in 1975. He worked the Houdini Séance room for 14 years and continued to perform mentalism at the Castle and elsewhere up until his death. In 1990 Mark began working for the Psychic Friends Network and became one of their top psychics; all these years he was also associated with the scientific skepticism community; he used his behind-the-scenes knowledge to write his 2009 book, Psychic Blues: Confessions of a Conflicted Medium, exposing the secrets of the psychic world. Over the years he was sought out for his expertise and appeared on Penn & Teller's Bullsh!t, The Con, Brain Games, Adam Ruins Everything and many more. Mark traveled the world, often with his partner Susan Gerbic lecturing about the psychic world, demonstrating cold and hot-reading to audiences and warning about the dangers of mediumship. He coined the phrase "Grief Vampire" to describe mediums who prey on vulnerable people. Also Mark wrote many books on séance theory and mentalism. Mark became involved in outing mediums in various ways, including Operation Pizza Roll which was featured in the New York Times in 2019. He was a member of the Monterey County Skeptics and AboutTimeProject.org. In 2022 he was honored as a fellow of the Committee for Skeptical Inquiry.

Mark also worked for the City of Los Angeles in Parks and Rec. Mark's cancer was diagnosed in 2018, but because of science and great medical care he was able to live a full and exciting life teaching and performing magic, lecturing, reading, traveling and spending quality time with friends. He died at home, surrounded by people and animals who loved him. His death was very peaceful. Mark is survived by his girlfriend of 15-years, Susan Gerbic and her sons Caspian (Jamie) and Stirling, plus his chosen family of hundreds who honored and respected him. There will be no services.

This obituary popped up in my FB feed today, so this is a belated tribute. Mark Wilson was in my 4th grade class in Palos Verdes way back in 1961 and remained a classmate all the way through until graduation in 1970. His interest in magic started early and he shared a few tricks with the class. There was a famous magician at the time ironically named Mark Wilson that he had taken an interest in. I didn´t get to know him well over the years, but I enjoyed seeing him at class reunions, the last in 2000. I´m pleased that he followed his passion and lived life to the fullest. Belated condolences to Susan and to the Wilson family.

I was invited to spend the evening at The Magic Castle and met Mark Edward there. We only spoke for about 5 minutes or so, but it was memorable. What a rich life he lived! He touched many lives in such a positive way. Susan, sending you prayers as you look to your next chapter and wish you well. Mark will always be remembered in a truly positive light, even by those who only experienced him for a short time.

Lastly, to whomever penned this Obituary, thank you for the time, effort and, dedication to fully honor Mark and to give us a glimpse into a remarkable man's life and the journey he took.

Mark and Susan came to Portland to do a presentation about exposing The Seatbelt Zeppelin (Thomas John) and Sylvia Browne. Before the show, Mark performed as a mentalist, and I got to be the audience member.
Now, heh.... how did he know I was thinking about a wristwatch?
I still enjoy remembering it years later. And I kept suggesting that the hosting groups bring them back.
Alas, would that it were so.

I met Mark at the Magistrorum conference last year. There were so many folks there whom I knew by reputation and their published works. Mark was one of them.

I'll always cherish the memory of buying his book Bundles and then having him share his personal bundle of vintage correspondence. The old bundle of envelopes was filled with eerie stories and... dare I say it... magic!

I've since begun working on my own Bundle. It will be years, I'm sure, before it's complete but I'll think about Mark every time I add a story to it. In fact, maybe Mark will be one of the stories in my bundle. My condolences to Susan, the cats, and all those who knew Mark. A bit of mystery and wonder has escaped this world.

Mark and I shared skepticism, but I smile when I think about him talking about his job and showing how much he cared about kids.
