Mark Young

Groton - Mark Young, 57, of Groton, passed away peacefully in his sleep Feb. 11, 2026. He was born April 16, 1968, in New London, the son of the late Ronald and Susan Young of Gales Ferry. Mark is survived by his partner of 20 years, George LaVallee of Groton; his sister, Carol Ort, and her husband, Robert Ort, of Gales Ferry; his nephew, David Ort of Plainfield; his "Soul sister," Aimee Porazzi of Groton; his "Soul niece," Olivia Kowalski of Florida; and his beloved fur baby, Lily. He was predeceased by his parents; as well as his maternal grandmother, Nellie Stevens; and paternal grandparents, George and Irma Young.

Mark began his working life in 1982 at Mystic Village Cinemas in Mystic, where he discovered a passion for the theater industry. He advanced from usher to projectionist to manager. When Hoyts opened a new theater in Stonington, he was selected as general manager and thrived in the role, earning Manager of the Year in 1997. In the early 2000s, he helped open a new theater in Lisbon, where he worked for more than 15 years before retiring from theater management. In 2017, Mark joined Mohegan Sun as an executive host and was promoted in August 2025 to player development executive.

Known for his kindness, loyalty, and compassion, he formed lasting friendships throughout his career. Outside of work, he found peace in nature, music, and cheering on the UConn Huskies women's basketball team.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. May 12, at Elm Grove Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in Mark's name may be made to Furry Angels Dachshund Rescue, Foster, R.I. (furryangelsdachshundrescue.com).
