With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Marla Latryce Baldwin, aged 57, who left this world on January 6, 2026, surrounded by the love of her family. Born on June 1, 1968, in the vibrant town of Muskegon, Michigan, Marla was the cherished daughter of the late Richard Baldwin Sr. and the late Rev. Barbara Riley Baldwin. Her parents’ dedication to education profoundly influenced her life's journey.

Among her many accomplishments, Marla was especially proud of raising her two sons, Jonathan and Kevin. She had a zest for life reflected in her wide range of hobbies, which included reading, swimming, dancing, singing, traveling, and watching classic movies.

Marla’s educational endeavors highlighted her commitment to learning and personal growth. After attending Muskegon Catholic Central High School, she graduated from Muskegon Heights High School in 1986. She went on to earn a bachelor's degree in human services from the University of Phoenix in 2007, followed by a master’s degree in educational and instructional technology from Grand Valley State University in 2012. Inspired by her parents' commitment to teaching, Marla became an educator herself, driven by a heartfelt desire to serve her community.

Throughout her career, Marla demonstrated unwavering dedication in various roles. She worked as a Certified Pharmacy Technician at Walgreens, a Community Outreach Coordinator at the Kent County Health Department, and a Teacher within the Grand Rapids Public Schools. Additionally, her contributions as a Reporter for the Grand Rapids Times Newspaper and as a Victim Advocate for Mothers Against Drunk Driving reflect her commitment to uplifting others in times of need. Marla also volunteered with the Kent County Prevention Coalition, advocating tirelessly for the prevention of underage substance use.

A significant aspect of her legacy was her work with MLB Projects Unlimited, where she inspired underrepresented students to pursue careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM). Under her guidance, countless young minds were empowered to dream, learn, and grow, solidifying her role as a catalyst for change in the lives of many.

Marla is preceded in death by her beloved parents, Richard Baldwin Sr. and Rev. Barbara Riley Baldwin, as well as her maternal grandparents Joseph Riley Sr. and Recessa Benson Riley, and her paternal grandparents Samuel Baldwin Sr. and Hattie Benjamin Baldwin.

She is lovingly remembered by her devoted sons, Jonathan Todd and Kevin Todd; her twin sister Rev. Tamara Baldwin of Columbia, South Carolina; her brothers Richard (Dwanya) Baldwin of Muskegon, Michigan and Brad (LaDonna) Baldwin of Charlotte, North Carolina; her uncle Joseph Riley Jr.-Houston of Texas; her dear cousin Natasha Riley of Muskegon, Michigan; and her adoring nephew and nieces:  Anthony Raglin-Pasedena of California, Jasmyn Johnson Baldwin of Greensboro, North Carolina, Sarah Baldwin-Charlotte of North Carolina, and Lia Baldwin of Muskegon, Michigan. Additionally an extensive circle of family and friends will forever cherish her memory.

As we gather to honor Marla's extraordinary life and the indelible impact she made on so many, let us celebrate her spirit of love, learning, and compassion. Her legacy will continue to inspire all whose lives she touched.

A Memorial Service will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, January 24, 2026, at Life Change Church, 3084 Whitehall Road, Muskegon, Michigan 49445.
