It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved Marlene. In the early morning hours of February 8th, 2024, the world lost a radiant soul, a beacon of light that shone brightly even on the darkest days. Marlene was not just a mother, wife, sister, friend, or colleague; she was the sunshine in our lives, a constant source of joy, warmth, and unwavering positivity.
Marlene's valiant battle with cancer showcased her incredible strength, resilience, and the depth of her spirit. She faced every challenge with grace and courage and without complaining, inspiring everyone around her to embrace life fully, love unconditionally, and maintain hope. Her laughter, infectious smile, and the kindness she extended to all will be deeply missed but never forgotten.
At age 14, Marlene was baptized as one of Jehovah's Witnesses. Her faith was important to her, and she taught her son to love Jehovah and instilled Bible principles in him. Despite the many challenges she experienced, she was strengthening her relationship with her Heavenly Father. The hope of being reunited with her family in paradise was something that gave her great comfort at the end of her life. (John 5:28,29)
She worked at Pharmacia, Pfizer, and spent 20 years at Johnson & Johnson as a Functional Manager in Early Development & Clinical Pharmacology in Global Clinical Operations. She pursued her bachelor's degree with the same passion she brought to her career, reflecting her commitment to growth and excellence.
Marlene's vibrant personality was a source of light and laughter among family and friends. She was always the first to laugh, crack a joke, and ensure that everyone around her was having a good time. Her passion for life was only matched by her love for family and friends, dancing, music, and the joy of the beach and sun-elements that she wove into the fabric of her life. She lived her life according to a simple yet profound belief: "Sprinkle a little love wherever you go," a quote that reflects the legacy she leaves behind.
Survived by her husband Samuel, son Jayden, mother Lurdinha do Couto, siblings Monica Cibien (Mauro) and Nuno Couto (Serena), nieces and nephews Noah, Savannah, Amanda, Stephanie, and Jordan, and her beloved dog Cali. Marlene's love and laughter will echo in our hearts forever.
Family and friends are invited to gather at Memorial Funeral Home, 155 South Ave. Fanwood NJ, from 4pm to 8pm on Monday, February 12th, 2024, with a service beginning at 7pm (zoom live stream information is below). A visitation will also be held on Tuesday, February 13th, 2024 from 9:30am to 10:30am, followed by the interment at Hillside Cemetery, Scotch Plains.
In mourning Marlene's passing, we also celebrate the remarkable life she lived and the countless lives she touched. Her legacy of love, compassion, and brightness will continue to live on in our hearts and memories. We take comfort in knowing she rests in peace, surrounded by love.
Marlene was a guiding light, exemplified by another of her favorite quotes, 'Do all the good you can, by all the means you can, in all the ways you can, in all the places you can, at all the times you can, to all the people you can, as long as you ever can.' This quote was not just a saying for Marlene; it was a way of life-a testament to the love and positivity she spread tirelessly. It is this essence of kindness that remains as her enduring legacy.
The family also expresses their deepest gratitude to the medical team at Englewood Hospital, the Center for Hope Hospice & Palliative Care in Scotch Plains, Vitas Healthcare, and innumerable friends for their devoted care and concern.
