Marlyn Barr Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Pippin Funeral Home - Camden Wyoming on Mar. 14, 2026.
Marlyn Louise Barr went home to meet her Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, on Saturday, March 7, 2026 after an extended hospital stay. In spite of her health challenges, her faith, smile, love for others, strength, joy, grace and light could never be dimmed. Shining through all of it was her love of Jesus and the peace of knowing He was in control.

Marlyn was born in Dover, DE on July 30, 1943 to James and Stella Bishop. She would soon become the big sister to Janet (Bishop) Durham and Joan Bishop. Her childhood stories include spending time with her grandmother, making and wearing her own clothes and when her dad bought the first TV in the neighborhood.

In high school, she met George R. Barr Jr. fell in love and they were married on May 5, 1962. They built a home and a family in Magnolia, where they gardened, volunteered with the Magnolia Fire Company and helped neighbors. Marlyn loved and considered her in-laws George R. Barr Sr. and Hilda (Mann) Barr an extension of her own family.

Marlyn is survived by her daughters Pamela C. Barr of Smyrna and Joanne L. Donovan (Terry, her favorite son-in-law) of Felton. She is also survived by her three granddaughters: Brittney A. Walker, Lauren A. Williams (Joseph) and Kelly G. Barr. These girls were her pride and joy, accomplishing so much with their lives and always leading with love, kindness and understanding. Her great grandchildren Jameson A. Walker, Adeline R. Walker, Joshua C. Williams and Lucas A. Williams were her favorites and she loved to show people pictures and share stories about them. Marlyn is also survived by extended family members and friends who she always enjoyed spending time with.

At a very young age, Marlyn accepted Jesus as her Savior and became a member of Faith Community Church in 1966. She was a Sunday school teacher for 42 years faithfully teaching 4 and 5 year olds the entire time. She formed special bonds with several families: sending cards, cooking meals, celebrating their life milestones and praying constantly for those facing difficulties. Marlyn was involved in several ministries over the years including nursery, making meals for families, Operation Christmas Child, supporting missionaries, and the Prime Timers. Her friends at Faith were a constant group of prayer warriors with mom and she loved singing worship songs on Sunday.

Marlyn held several jobs during her life from the first one at Libby's Cannery to running an in- home daycare to finally retiring as a Rural Postal Carrier for the United States Postal Service. As a retiree, she kept herself busy with church, ladies' auxiliary, friends and family activities. She also served as secretary for the Shepherd Place in Dover, DE for many years. She was always willing to travel anywhere and Pam and Joanne can remember the many road trips to Gettysburg, PA. She enjoyed countless trips to dine on Maryland crabs with both family and her best friend, Fran Moore. We will always treasure the memory of our recent family cruise where she swam with and kissed a dolphin.

During their married life, George and Marlyn volunteered at the Magnolia Fire Company, with both achieving life membership. After George's passing, Marlyn continued with the Ladies Auxiliary and served as the Treasurer, until her passing. She shopped and cooked for many events for the community, always with a smile on her face and a love for her neighbors.

Known for her cooking, we will surely treasure the recipes she passed down including her vegetable beef soup, yankee doodle macaroni, fudge, yeast rolls, strawberry jam, Christmas and Easter twists, peas and dumplings and orange fluff, to name just a few. We will also treasure her frequent cards and notes marked by her signature abundance of x's and o's as well as the many laughs shared over games and family dinners. She was a remarkable woman who touched so many lives in so many ways. She always had time for a smile, a laugh, and a prayer.

Marlyn's favorite verse, which she personalized by adding her own name, was Deuteronomy 10:12: And now, Israel, (Marlyn) what doth the Lord the God require of thee, but to fear the Lord thy God, to walk in all his ways, and to love him and to serve the Lord thy God with all thy heart and with all thy soul.

A Celebration of Life will be held at Faith Community Church, 2240 S. DuPont Highway, Dover, DE 19901 on Saturday March 21, 2026 with visitation starting at 10:00 A.M. and the service starting at 11:30 A.M. Burial will follow at Barratt's Chapel Cemetery. While flowers are beautiful, instead, the family kindly suggests any donations be made to Faith Community Church at the above address or to the Magnolia Ladies Auxiliary at P.O. Box 108 Magnolia, DE 19962-0108. Online condolences may be made via www.pippinfuneralhome.com.
