Donald Johnson Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Pippin Funeral Home - Camden Wyoming on Mar. 10, 2026.
Donald Ray Johnson, 69, of Dover, Delaware was born on September 4, 1956 and peacefully passed away on March 3, 2026 surrounded by his loving family.

Donald graduated from Milford High School in 1975, excelling in football and track. In 2009, he and his teammates were honored when the 1974 Milford High School football team was inducted into the Milford High School Gridiron Club Hall of Fame as Henlopen Conference Champions. He continued his education at Delaware State University and the University of Delaware.

Donald had a warm spirit and a gift for making people laugh. He loved sharing stories, especially about growing up with his siblings, often starting with his familiar phrase, "Can I tell you something?" His nieces and nephews cherished these moments.

In 1989, Donald married Stephanie Winder, and four children were born to that union. He loved his children deeply and remained a caring and encouraging presence in their lives.

Donald worked as a substitute teacher and later became a skilled brick mason with J & J Masonry in Dover. He also shared his talents in carpentry, painting, and home repairs with family, friends, and others in need.

Donald gave his life to the Lord at Holy Trinity Church of the Living God, the church founded by his mother, Overseer Rosie L. Johnson. Many affectionately called him "Deacon Johnson," a title he cherished.

He was preceded in death by his parents Lonnie and Rosie Lee Johnson; brothers: Robert, Willie, and Alvin; and sister, Martha.

He is survived by his children: Donald Wilson, Marvis Smith, Rai-Shawn Johnson, Darian Johnson, Stephen Johnson, Donna Smith (Karl), Renaeta Burton (Bruce), Sierra Stevens, Shardaya Cohen, Amanda Tyler, Ebony Stratton and Diamond Johnson. He is also remembered by his surrogate daughters: Patrice Cain, Danielle Cain, and Brittany Bordley.

Donald is survived by his brothers Lonnie Johnson, Jr. (Valerie) and Sylvester "Vest" Johnson (Charletta),:and sisters: Penny Smith (Jimmy), Cornelia Johnson Davis (LaPointe), Lonzenia "Loni" Fenton, and Rosie Johnson. He also leaves a legacy of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, extended family, and a devoted church family.

Donald will be remembered for his warm heart, humor, and storytelling. His love for family, faith, and community will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.

A funeral service will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Saturday, March 14, 2026 at Holy Trinity Church of the Living God, 425 W. Division Street, Dover, Delaware 19904 with a viewing from 9:00 A.M. until 10:30 A.M. Saturday. Interment will follow at Barratt's Chapel Cemetery in Frederica, Delaware, and family and friends are invited to return to the church afterward for the repast. Flowers may be delivered to Holy Trinity Church of the Living God between 8:00 AM and 9:30 AM Saturday. Online condolences may be shared at www.pippinfuneralhome.com.
