Marsha Ann Dowdey, 66, passed away peacefully early Friday morning, July 11, 2025, at her brother's home in Americus, Georgia.
Marsha was born on February 9, 1959, in Americus, Georgia, to the late Rufus ‘Sonny’ Dowdey and the late Shirley Ward Dowdey. She received her Bachelor’s degree in nursing and worked as a nurse for many years, as well as working in child care at Cheek Memorial Baptist Church.
Although Marsha never had children, she treated her nieces and nephews as if they were her own. Each one held a special piece of her heart and she cherished her time with them. She was an avid fan of wrestling, Elvis Presley, gospel and country music. Marsha loved to travel with her family, and especially enjoyed trips to the beach and Disney World. She was a gentle soul to everyone she met.
She is survived by her brothers, Rufus ‘Rudy’ Dowdey (Carolyn), and Darrell ‘Brian’ Dowdey (Angie); her brother-in-law, Darrell Denney; six nieces, Kari Denney, Melissa Dowdey (Oscar Garcia), Brooks Wright (Anthony), Kimberly Renfroe (Jonathan), Brittany Collins (Jonathan), Brook Peak (Walter Powers); four nephews, Alex Denney, Jonathan Dowdey, Steven Dowdey (Jess), Paxton Hanson (Frankie); and several great-nieces and nephews. She is also survived by a lifelong friend, Martha ‘Marti’ Nelson of Norfolk, VA.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her stepmother, Louise Pritchard Dowdey; her sister, Sheila ‘June’ Denney; and her nephew, Thomas Mitchell Dowdey.
The family will receive friends for a visitation on Sunday, July 13, 2025, at Hancock Funeral Home, 427 S. Lee St., between the hours of 5 and 7 pm and an hour before the service on Monday. The family will receive visitors at other times at the home of Oscar Garcia and Melissa Dowdey at 232 Mockingbird Drive in the Hidden Lakes subdivision. A funeral service will be held on Monday, July 14, 2025 at 2:00 pm in the Chapel of Hancock Funeral Home. A graveside service will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
