Martha Broadwater Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Andrew D. Ferguson Funeral Home & Crematories, Inc. - Uniontown on Oct. 2, 2025.

Publish in a newspaper

Martha E. Broadwater passed away on Sept. 22, 2025 at Crowley Nursing Home in Crowley TX. She was 95. She was born on July 15, 1930 in Vestaburg PA, the daughter of Fred and Susan (Mehalik) Bednar. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William R. Broadwater on June 18, 1995; sisters Mary Mehalik, Helen Cegelski, Magaret Gustovich, and Suzanne McKean; and brother Albert Bednar.

Martha grew up in Millsboro PA and graduated from East Bethlehem High School in 1948. She lived in Brownsville PA for many years where she worked as a secretary at the Monongahela Railway. She was a member of the Central Presbyterian Church where she sang in the choir and served as Youth Choir Director and Superintendent of Sunday School. She was a member of the Zeta Delta Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority. She briefly lived in Cleveland OH where she was a secretary at the Chevrolet plant. Martha lived most of her adult life in Hopwood PA. She was a member of the Third Presbyterian Church in Uniontown where she was a choir member and organist for many years. She was a member of the American Guild of Organists and played the organ for hundreds of weddings and funerals in Fayette County over six decades. Her proudest moment as an organist was when Joe Paterno complimented her on her music at Penn State benefactor Robert Eberly's funeral. She was active in many community organizations including the Uniontown Music Club (President), Order of Eastern Star (Worthy Matron), White Shrine, Women's Organization of Forest Park Aquatics (President), and the Uniontown Country Club. Having a great sense of style, Martha was a fashion show model for many area clothing stores including Goldstein's in Brownsville, Metzler's in Uniontown, and Miller's in Charleroi. She and her husband Bill were loyal members of the Hopwood Ho Jo Counter Club. After Howard Johnson's closure, they re-established at the Uniontown Eat'n Park, a place she visited daily, sometimes twice a day.

In her later years Martha loved doing crossword puzzles, playing cards, and watching Steve Harvey. An avid Pittsburgh Pirates fan, she always called her daughter after a tough loss to lament, "What's wrong with the Pirates?" Martha spent the last 10 years of her life close to her family in Texas.

Martha is survived by daughters Cheryl Cline and Kris Broadwater, son-in-law Owen Cline, granddaughter Amanda Cline all of Arlington TX; and granddaughter Juliana Vinluan of Thousand Oaks, CA.
