Martha DePodesta
4/7/1942 - 4/19/2024
Loving, caring, generous, kindhearted, dependable, and dedicated
are just a few words that come to mind when reminiscing about
my mother. Attending a Jesuit University, not a day went by
without hearing about the "Jesuit Ideal" which translates into
putting others before oneself, seeing the good in all things, and
dedicating your life to the service of others. My mother was the
epitome of the Jesuit Ideal without even knowing about it. She
was selfless as she would do anything for anybody while always
putting others before herself. Whether preparing an impromptu
meal for me and my college friends after a surprise visit home or
relocating to Florida without hesitation to help our family, she was
dependable, always there to help, and always able to be counted
on.
Many do not know this, but she was petrified to drive on I-95. She
would take any road possible to avoid the highway. Avoiding the
highway was not an option when taking Melissa to Memorial Sloan
Kettering for treatment (sometimes multiple trips per week), and
they never missed an appointment. She graciously accepted the
challenge. I am sure that she hid her panic while her knuckles
were white for the entire trip. I can just imagine the annoyed
drivers that were behind her.
My mother was dedicated to every title ever given to her.
Whether it be daughter, sister, mother, mother-in-law, wife, aunt,
friend, or grandmother, she accepted each title with honor and
always did her best to fulfill each role. I am grateful for the quality
time that she was able to spend with her granddaughters, Adelina
and Astella, while also forming a close friendship with her
daughter-in-law, Audrey.
Some say to dance like nobody is watching, but my mom would
sing like nobody was listening. She will be remembered for her
humor; she would always try to make everyone laugh. She will
also be remembered for her fine culinary skills that everyone
enjoyed.
She has left this world a better place with her generosity and her
impactful love for each of us. I LOVE YOU MOM!
