Martha Hurlburt Obituary

MARTHA LOUISE HURLBURT
January 18, 1960 ˜ December 31, 2025

Martha Louise Hurlburt died on December 31, 2025, in Vancouver, Washington after a long battle with early-onset Alzheimer’s Disease. She was 65 years old.

Martha was born on January 18, 1960, in Portland, Oregon to Hugh and Clarene Hurlburt. She graduated from David Douglas High School in 1978, then attended Seattle Pacific University, Portland State University, and Western Conservative Baptist Seminary.

She worked as an accountant for several years before discovering her love of teaching. Martha served in the David Douglas School District before moving to the Evergreen School District where she taught for several years at Riverview, Harmony, and Illahee Elementary Schools.

Her personal faith in Jesus Christ was the cornerstone of her life. Prior to her illness, Martha was actively involved at New Heights Church in Vancouver, counseled youth at Camp Bighorn in Montana, and served on her church summer missions team in Martin, Slovakia.

Martha is survived by her sister Deena (John) Hahn and nephew James. Many thanks go to her caregiver Dana and staff for their loving care for her these past several years.

A “Celebration of Life” service for Martha will occur on February 14, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at New Heights Church (Central Campus) at 7913 NE 58th Avenue, Vancouver, WA 98665. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be given in Martha’s name to Open House Ministries at https://www.sheltered.org/. Lincoln Memorial Park is in charge of arrangements.

I have so many wonderful memories of Martha from our childhood. I have been saddened by her illness, and am happy that she is now released and no longer suffering. Her dry wit, sharp intellect and compassion were cornerstones of her personality. We had a lot of fun together with so many others in our youth group. I will miss her. May she rest in peace and rise in glory.

Martha led at least one Bible study that I was part of in the mid-2000s. She was so patient when asking us questions. I thought she showed her gift of teaching in this way. Instead of rushing to speak as so many do, she paused which allowed us to ponder her question, & gave us time to answer, instead of rushing on. I loved that & still think of her example when I lead meetings at work. She had a lovely & beautiful spirit, and was a gracious hostess. Praise God that she is Home with Jesus!!

I knew Martha from New Heights Church and enjoyed our time together there and in Slovakia while on the missions team with her. Back in Vancouver, we visited her mother a few times together just before she passed. I moved out of town shortly after and lost touch with her but I remember Martha being a loving and giving person and very gifted in teaching. I remember her classes being very popular with the Slovak students and know they had a lot of fun with her and she with them. I was saddened to hear of her declining health a few years back but am grateful for her merciful Savior and His ever-present help in her time of trouble, and for her good friend Nancy. May her family and friends find comfort in the arms of the One she found comfort in and who loves her so much He made a way for her to be with Him forever more. Knowing she is with Him right now fills my heart with gladness for her and Praises for Him! Rest in Peace, Martha.
