Martha Paul of Tenafly, NJ, passed away at home surrounded by family and friends who loved her greatly.
Martha loved Ray Charles, and Patsy Cline; the hustle of the city and long Summer days at the beach. She was known to eat Junior's cheesecake for breakfast and could often be found at the ice box after midnight having an ice cream cone or two. She loved Bergdorfs yet loved a hot dog at Jones Beach just as much. Her motto was to kill them with kindness, and she practiced that her entire life. She had many, many friends, all over the world who loved her very much.
A lifetime adventuress; she boarded an ocean liner, solo, as a teenager, traveling from Europe to the United States to come live with a pen pal whom she had never met. She went on to become one of the original TWA glamour stewardesses, living a life of adventure, traveling everywhere from the white sand beaches of Mombasa to the peaks of Machu Picchu to the busy streets of Hong Kong. By the time she married, she had visited just about every country in the world.
When she married, she dedicated her life to raising her children. She loved taking her girls to the beach in Santa Monica, spending days in the city and sharing her love of tennis and skiing with them. Although leading a much more traditional life, the adventuress still burned within her, and she was known to drive cross country with her girls, long before the days of cell phones and navigation.
In later years, when Parkinson's took its toll, she found joy in the small things, like walks outside in the sunshine, kisses and cuddles from her grand dog Truman, and holidays spent with loved ones. She kept her mind sharp even as Parkinson's wreaked havoc on her body she was a voracious reader, devouring everything from Hemingway to Updike to the latest John Grisham novel. The last years were tough, but she fought like a champ to the end. One of her favorite poets, Pablo Neruda, had said, "You can cut all the flowers but you cannot keep Spring from coming." She is in peace now, and is survived by all who loved her dearly.
