Martha Schimpff Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Browning-Forshay Funeral Home - Hawthorne on Jun. 8, 2025.
Martha Ann Schimpff, a lifelong educator, devoted daughter, and cherished member of the Midland Park community, passed away peacefully on June 6, 2025, at the age of 89.
Born on May 31, 1936, at Paterson General Hospital, Martha was raised in Midland Park, New Jersey, after her family relocated from Peoria, Illinois in 1929. She spent her childhood at 142 East Center Street, surrounded by a loving household that included her grandmother, Cora Schimpff; her parents, Robert H. Schimpff and Eleanor Boyce; and her aunt, Pearl (Schimpff) Labaugh.
Martha graduated from Pompton Lakes High School at a time when students traveled by train from the Worthendyke station. She went on to attend William Paterson Teachers College (now William Paterson University), where she followed her calling in education.
After college, Martha moved to Washington State, where she taught elementary school and was actively involved in pet care - two of her greatest passions. In time, she returned to Midland Park to care for her mother, a role she embraced with quiet devotion.
In her later years, Martha continued to serve her community as a beloved crossing guard at the corner of Glen and Prospect Avenues, where her warm presence and kind smile were a welcome part of each school day. She was also an active member of the Midland Park United Methodist Church, contributing her time and spirit to the congregation.
She is survived by her first cousins, James M. Labaugh of Pound Ridge, NY, and Patricia Capuano of Wyckoff, NJ.
Martha will be remembered for her gentle nature, her lifelong love of children, and the deep roots she planted in the town she called home. Her legacy lives on in the lives she touched - both in the classroom and at the corner.
