Portsmouth, NH – Chief Petty Officer, Martin W. "Marty" Curtis, USN, Retired, age 86, of Portsmouth, passed away on March 29, 2025 at Portsmouth Hospital following a brief illness. For over 50 years, he was the beloved husband of Joanne B. (Durling) Curtis.
He was born in Ringos Mills, KY on August 28, 1938, son of the late Samuel Bruce & Pearl Ellen (Tolliver) Curtis.
Marty was a Master Mason in the Scottish Rite, having been involved with St. John's Lodge in Portsmouth for many years.
Prior to his retirement, he enjoyed a 20-year career with the US Navy, honorably discharged in 1976 as a submariner at the rank Chief Petty Officer. Post-retirement, he worked at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard until retiring with an additional 20 years of service.
Besides his wife, Joanne, he is survived by a son, David Curtis and friend Crissy; a stepson, Alan Simpson and his wife, Christine, and their children Christopher, Andrew & Katie; also his sister Ruth (Curtis) Kiser of Kentucky; also many nieces, nephews & cousins. He was preceded in death by several siblings.
