Martin H. Ireland, Jr., “Marty,” 79, passed away at home on Thursday, June 13th, 2024.
Marty was born on July 23rd, 1944, in Waltham, MA, to the late Martin and Eleanor (Howes) Ireland. He lived in MA for a short time and spent most of his life in South Florida. Marty served honorably in the US Navy. Prior to entering the Navy, he was a Sports Writer for the Sun Sentinel. Marty retired from the United States Postal Service after 36 years and was President of the National Association of Letter Carriers Union, Branch 2550, Fort Lauderdale, FL, from 1990 to 2004. He was an active member of several Democratic Clubs in South Florida and SALT (Seniors and Law Enforcement Together). Marty enjoyed spending time with his family, bowling, cooking, and traveling by car or train (Marty would not fly).
Marty is survived by his wife of 54 years, Patricia (Yaksich) Ireland; daughters Jennifer (Mike) Dyer of Venetia, PA, and Diane Ireland of Plantation, FL. He was a proud grandfather to Lindsay, Mikey, Charlie, Ben, Lucas, Connor, and Brody, who lovingly called him “Grumps.” He is also survived by his sister, Susan Byrne; sisters-in-law, Mary Jane Collette and Gaye Yaksich; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.
Marty was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Ray Chase; sister, Gloria Ward; brothers-in-law, Mike Yaksich, Dave Collette, Jim Byrne, Danny Ward; and sister-in-law Connie Chase.
Family and friends will be received at St. Bonaventure Catholic Church Parish Hall, 1301 SW 136th Ave., Davie, FL, from 9-10 a.m. on Monday, July 29th, 2024, followed by a Memorial Mass at the Church.
A private interment, with Military Honors, will be held at the South Florida National Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the family and will be divided among Marty’s favorite causes.
