Martin “Marty” Franz Krause passed away peacefully in his sleep at the age of 74 on Friday, February 20th, 2026. Born in Chicago, Illinois, Marty dedicated his life to art and education, leaving a lasting impact in the field through his passion for curation and scholarship. It was during his time at the University of Illinois studying Ancient Greek and Art History that he met his future wife, Mary. Their love story began in those college days, culminating in a memorable elopement between classes, a testament to their adventurous spirit and deep connection.

Marty had an illustrious career as the Curator of Prints, Drawings, and Photographs, or as he called it “all things flat”, at the Indianapolis Museum of Art at Newfields for over 40 years. He was a scholar, raconteur, and like one of his favorite artists, J.M.W. Turner, a "great pedestrian", often walking eight miles a day around his home in Carmel, IN. Beyond his professional endeavors, Marty cherished his personal life. Marty and Mary spent many summers in Europe and traveled extensively, creating treasured memories before and after starting a family.

Marty is survived by the love of his life and wife of over fifty years Mary, his daughters and their spouses Kirstin and Aaron Gotway, Elizabeth and David Harting, and his five beloved granddaughters, Zoë, Ava, Lily, Alexis, and Victoria, his siblings Sandy and Paul Walles, Maggie and Eldon Olson, and Bonnie and Jeff Melick, and a smallish horde of nieces and nephews. He is proceeded in death by his father Martin Sr., his mother Jeanne, his stepfather Harold, and his brother Ken. He will be greatly missed by all that knew and loved him.

Marty's impact on his family, friends, and the art community will not be forgotten, as he leaves behind a rich tapestry of memories and accomplishments.

In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be made in his name to the Print Collection at the Indianapolis Museum of Art at Newfields.
