Martin McElwee Obituary

Published by D'Anjolell Memorial Home of Broomall on Jun. 22, 2017.
Martin Joseph McElwee Martin Joseph McElwee: Born Joseph Michael States, Nov. 3, 1963. Adopted by Therese and Joseph McElwee, October 1964 and named Martin Joseph McElwee ("Martin" being after St. Martin De Porres). Martin died suddenly on June 22nd, 2017 from complications due to cancer. The fact of Martin's adoption was unique at the time since he was a mixed-race child. All we know is that his mother attended West Catholic High School. Therese and Joe McElwee adopted him and brought him home to Merion, and from that point on he was just another McElwee and member of the community of Saint Matthias Parish (Bala Cynwyd), being the 10th of what would eventually be a family with 14 children. Marty graduated from Saint Matthias Grade School in 1979 and Archbishop Carroll High School in 1983. Marty was a defensive back on Carroll's Catholic League Southern Division Championship Football Team his Senior Year. Marty always had an interest and skill in art. He attended Catholic University and played Football for one season there, and finally graduated from the Tyler School of Arts with a degree in Graphic Arts in 1992. Marty worked as a design artist at Kinko's for several years, and for the past 15 years with his father's business, United Machine and Tool. His father, Joe McElwee, Jr., started that business in 1953, and Marty continued it until the day he died. Marty met his wife-to-be Barbara in 1995. They were married on January 10th, 1998. Marty and his beloved Barbara have two great boys, Michael age 15, and David age 14. Both were home with their father in his final moments. The three of them were the last people Marty saw. Marty was beloved by his brothers and sisters, cousins, aunts and uncles, in-laws, his 45 nieces and nephews, and many friends. Marty was an avid fan of all sports, especially Eagles Football. He loved music and the arts, nature, and politics. To know Marty was to know his opinion, and except for the times he was wrong, he was always right. Marty could debate with the best, but he never held a grudge. Relationships for Marty were always the most important thing. Marty was preceded in death by his brother Gerry, his sister Mary Carol, and his two parents. He will be sorely missed by all who knew him, and he will be welcomed into heaven by those who went before him. May his soul rest in peace. May perpetual light shine upon him. Relatives and friends are invited to his viewing Tuesday Evening 6-8 PM at The D'Anjolell Memorial Home of Broomall 2811 West Chester Pike, Broomall, PA 19008 and Wednesday morning 10:00-10:45 AM at St. Norbert's Church 50 Leopard Rd., Paoli, PA 19301 followed by his Funeral Mass at 11:00 AM. Interment Calvary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers contributions in Marty's memory may be made to For Pete's Sake 620 W. Germantown Pike, Plymouth Meeting, PA 19462.

To Barb- I don't know if you'll remember me from your days at Greater Media but I saw the notice and had to let you know how very sorry I am for your loss. I pray God's angels will lovingly and gently guide you and your sons through your grief and give you peace. My heartfelt condolences extend to the entire family.

I don't think you could play (football) with, and especially against, Marty without him leaving a big impression. He made a big impression on me. He had a great smile and was generous with it. Though I've not seen Marty in about 25 years, it felt as if the world was a bit darker, a little less colorful, when I learned he had passed. St. Martin de Porres, pray for us.
