Martin Monks Obituary

Martin Dale Monks

1956 ~ 2024

Martin Dale Monks returned with honor to his Heavenly Father on November 1st, 2024 after a long and courageous battle with cancer. He spent his last hours in this life at home, surrounded by his family. He is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Janet Grant Monks, to whom he was sealed for eternity in Provo, Utah and by his six children, Andrew (Lisa), Katharyn (Chris), Kristy, Kim (Jesse), Kiri (Nicholas), Kylianne (Michael), as well as 14 grandchildren, one great-granddaughter and many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his siblings Larry (Peggy), Ron, and Janice (Terry), his sisters-in-law Nancy and Gail, and his Canadian siblings-in-law Susan (Rob), Christine (Mark), Jamie (Sarah), and Peggy. He was preceded in death by his parents Clayton "Bud" and Dolores "Dolly" Monks, and by his older brother Dan.

He was born on March 4th, 1956 in Oroville, California and graduated from Brigham Young University with degrees in history and public administration. He served as a missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Nagoya, Japan. His long career was centered around service to others; he was enlisted in the Army National Guard in California and Utah, and worked for over 30 years as both a police officer and deputy sheriff in California and later a deputy United States Marshal.

His life's labors were focused on loving and providing for his family. He adored, and was adored by, his wife and eternal companion. His six children were his joy. He continually supported, and was deservedly proud, of each of their personal and professional achievements. Though his own accomplishments were diverse and distinguished, the walls of his home were adorned with the lives of his children and grandchildren. No family is perfect, but he led his family with a perfect love, and he was enveloped in that love at his passing.

Martin was a humble disciple of Jesus Christ and faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He spent his life striving to become like the Savior and endeavoring to be worthy to hold His priesthood. He treated everyone around him – friends and family, dignitaries and the indigent, co-workers and convicts – with compassion, kindness, and charity. During the weeks he spent in and out of the Huntsman Cancer Institute, his gentle nature and good humor endeared him to many of the hematology staff. Heartfelt tears were shed at his final discharge into hospice care. His example of steadfast faith and devotion to the gospel of Jesus Christ blessed all those around him. His family, his church, and his community will be less without him.

Though the measure of his life was not as long as he or his family would have liked, his measure was full of faith, love, and service, and he has been joyfully welcomed back into the loving arms of his parents and his Savior.

A viewing will be held on Friday, the 8th of November at the Crescent 22nd ward chapel at 552 East 11400 South, Draper, Utah, from 6:00-8:00 PM. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, the 9th of November at the Crescent 22nd ward chapel at 11:00 AM, with a viewing preceding the service at 10:00 AM. He will be laid to rest in the shadow of the beautiful Wasatch Mountains at Larkin Sunset Gardens.

The funeral service will be streamed live. Please visit Martin's obituary page at LarkinCares.com and click on the "Watch Services" link.

Martin and I interacted mostly in church activities and callings. But we also shared experiences in law enforcement in federal service. To his family, I thank you for adding to my family´s life and memories.

We send our heartfelt prayers heavenward for your dear family. What a privilege it was to rub shoulders with such a great man. It was always a joy to see him at church, in the neighborhood, or even crossing paths through work. What a man.
With love, the Francis family.

Martin took a course from me at BYU over forty years ago. Even then he knew exactly what he wanted to do: serve as a US Marshal in Salt Lake City. And he did it, admirably, working his way there, as a Sonoma County sheriff deputy (the only law along the Russian River after midnight, he joked), then Sausalito PD, then to the Marshal's office in San Francisco, and finally to SLC. I have never known anyone else who was so determined and yet so good-natured, wise and calm while others sputtered in confusion. He taught me far more than I ever could have taught him. Truly a good man.

I am so saddened at this loss. I had the honor to work with Martin in the Salt Lake City Office of the US Marshals Service. He was a hard worker but most of all a true professional. Fair as they get.

Martin quietly helped me thru an extremely hard time in my life. His kind acts and non judgmental demeanor certain helped me. My prayers go out to the Monks family. Peace to you.

As one of the Federal Judges that Martin served, I can speak of the goodness of this man. He was a dedicated public servant. He served as a U.S. Marshal as a true professional. I am fortunate to have known him. Ted Stewart

I worked with Marty at Sausalito PD many years ago. His calm, professional demeanor was a great asset. I sincerely enjoyed working with him. One of my fondest memories is of this tall, blond-haired officer surprising Japanese tourists he had stopped for a traffic violation by speaking to them fluently in their language. My prayers and condolences go out to the Monks family.

Marty and I were partners at the Sonoma County Sheriffs Dept, Santa Rosa Ca. He was also in my Judo classes. A wonderful God loving man who will be sorely missed and always remembered with love by all who knew him. Condolences to his family.
