It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Martin J. O’Connell, 77, of Spring Hill, TN. Marty passed away on Saturday, September 6, 2025. He is leaving behind a legacy of kindness, resilience, wisdom, humility, and integrity.

Marty was born in Chicago, IL on March 21st, 1948, to Martin and Ellen (Cremin) O’Connell. After Ellen’s early passing, Marty and his siblings spent much of their younger years at Maryville Academy in Des Plaines, IL. The time at Maryville instilled a profound sense of gratitude and a powerful ability to appreciate what one has. One of his favorite quotes was “want what you have - and you will have everything.” After attending Quigley Preparatory Seminary for a short time, Marty graduated from Saint George High School in 1966. He was united in marriage to Candy (Chase) O’Connell on November 11, 1967. Marty, Candy, and family lived in Chicago for 20+ years and then moved to Bensenville, IL. Bensenville was home base for another 20+ years. Marty and Candy settled on the Nashville, TN area as the place to live in retirement. He didn’t mind cutting grass but dreaded shoveling the snow.

Throughout his amazing life, Marty had many things to be remembered by, including his time at National T, to being the OS guy and man that could fix anything. He enjoyed supporting his kids in their athletic journeys - coaching and driving to practices. He most loved traveling with Candy seeing the country in his RV. He had many hobbies including archery, making bread and baking cheesecakes, playing horse shoes, and making cards for family and friends. His most recent interest was taking care of plants. He loved the little league World Series and was proud of his giraffe collection.

All who knew him will miss his witty sense of humor and the steady presence he provided. Though he is no longer with us, his love and legacy live on in each of us. He touched all who he met and his memories have enriched the lives of so many.

Marty is survived by his beautiful and loving wife, Candy. His Children: Martin (Sandee) O’Connell, Brian O’Connell, and Susan (James) Amsler. His siblings; Peggy (the late Jim) Wykle, Mary Meyers and Patrick (Sheala) O’Connell. Loving Uncle to many!

He was a proud Papa to Martin IV and Maggie O’Connell, Jacqueline O’Connell and Jillian, Jason, Rowan and Joseph Amsler.

Marty is preceded in death by his parents and his wonderful sister Nora. May they meet again.

Join us on Saturday October 4th from 3-8 pm at the Oaks Funeral Home 1201 E Irving Park Rd (and Prospect) in Itasca IL to have a sweet treat (his favorite) and share memories of our favorite guy.
