Martin Emerson Shaffer, born on October 6, 1952, in Urbana, Ohio, passed away peacefully on August 27, 2024, at the age of 71 at Sentara Norfolk General Heart Hospital.
Martin devoted many years of his life working as a general laborer at a hatchery. Outside of his work, he found joy and solace in music, playing the harmonica with friends in the Generations Band. His spiritual life was enriched through his attendance and membership at the Salvation Army Church.
He is preceded in death by his beloved parents, Paul Shaffer and Virginia Davis Shaffer, as well as his brother, Ivan Shaffer, and two sons, Marty and James.
Martin is survived by his cherished children: Christina McNeal (Paul), Elizabeth Chaney (Christopher), Robert Paul Shaffer (Cyndi), and Barbara Campbell; three sisters, Kathy Swan, Hennie Yonder, and Rosie Mason; a brother, Myron Shaffer; eleven grandchildren; and twelve great-grandchildren. Martin also had many nieces and nephews and lots of great-nieces and great-nephews. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
A memorial service to honor Martin's life will be held at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to Salvation Army, 906 4th Street, Elizabeth City, NC 27909 (online at [email protected]), American Heart Association, P.O.
