I first met Martin Smith in the summer of 1977 while interviewing for a social studies position at Heights High School, and I remember the experience like it was yesterday. Over the next ten or 12 years I came to know him well, first as a mentor then towards the end of his tenure as a friend. He was a complex person with a unique skill set and my teaching style was greatly nurtured and influenced by his leadership, constructive suggestions, and patience. There were times that my youthful exuberance caused him concerns and created difficulties with parents, but this man supported me through thick and thin, but also called me out when I had overstepped my bounds. I would say that in many ways he was a very private man in a very public job. One specific instance that changed our relationship was a chance encounter in Eureka Springs Ark. in the late 1980's over spring break. He and I spent nearly an hour together while our wives were shopping and he flattered me by using me as a sounding board over school related issues. After that our relationship changed to that of colleagues and I will never forget the feeling that he really valued me on his team. One final story will illustrate his unique leadership style. When we returned from summer break sometime in the early to mid 1980's he loaded the staff onto several school buses and announced he was taking us on a two hour roadtrip. We were skeptical of his plans and a number of people thought it was a waste of time. What Dr. Smith did was take us on a tour of the Heights attendance area, and without saying a word made us see what a variety of neighborhoods it encompassed, and that lots of our kids came from very challenging circumstances. All Dr. Smith said at the end was he hoped we could incorporate some of what we had seen into our thinking and lesson planning. In closing, I know I drove him crazy at times, but I will always be grateful for his faith in me, and giving a 24 year old kid a chance to do the only thing he was ever truly good at. I know I speak for many other people whom he positively influenced.... RIP Steve

He led a good long life. My aunt 'Fleda and uncle Don, his parents, were and would have been proud. He is missed.

Our thoughts on the passing of your beloved father and grandfather. He was a kind and wise educator. I went to him on several occasions for advice and left with the tools to address the problem. Thank you for sharing him with us. May the memories that linger be those of joy and laughter.
