Martin E. Wright Sr., 92, born and raised in Clinton, resident of Lunenburg, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Thursday August 4, 2022 after being stricken ill at home. He is survived by his beloved wife of 66 years, Helen (DiPietro) Wright; their children and spouses, Martin E. Wright, Jr. & Cheryl of Lunenburg, MA; Raymond C. Wright & Martine of Clinton, MA; Karen Robinson & Ricky of Westminster, MA; Maureen Guzzi & Paul of Worcester, MA; and Mark A. Wright & Michelle of Burlington, MA; his adoring grandchildren: Michael Wright, Jackie Loewen, Steven Robinson, Matthew Wright, Kristen Thompson, Jennifer Wright, Nicole Hartnett, Joshua Guzzi, Samantha Guzzi, Aleesha Guzzi, Hannah Wright, Sabrina Guzzi and Zachary Wright, as well as twenty-two great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, extended family, and many dear friends. He is pre-deceased by his siblings, Raymond Wright and Lorraine "Sis" Notaro.
Marty was born on April 22, 1930, to the late Raymond and Catherine (McNamara) Wright. He attended Clinton High School where he was a halfback for the Galloping Gaels varsity football team. A talented athlete, he competed as an amateur boxer and lightweight Golden Gloves champion contender in 1949. Marty then proudly served our nation in the US Marine Corps during the Korean Conflict and was honorably discharged as a Corporal after three years of service. He returned home safely and began his career with Granger Construction and worked for many years as a self-employed roofing contractor. Marty was later employed as a transportation officer for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Department of Correction until retiring. Marty and Helen raised five children together in Stow, MA. He never lost the love for his hometown of Clinton and the close community where he considered himself a townie. He could often be found at local establishments enjoying the company of friends and offering his outspoken retort of "give your head shake." A sports nut, he cheered faithfully for the Patriots, Red Sox, Celtics and Bruins, and far louder for his children, grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren from the sidelines at all of their events. He was an avid fan of horse racing, poker, and his numbers: 12-23-60. He spent his summers with Helen and family at his beloved Hampton Beach cottage; he enjoyed golfing with his sons, grandsons, and friends at their annual golf trip up to age 90, which we rightly named the Marty Wright Classic! Marty and Helen enjoyed every day together in retirement, drove to McDonalds every morning for breakfast and coffee where the staff knew their order by heart. At a moment's notice Marty would be there for any family member or friend in need. Above all, he was a devoted family man, loving husband, father, grandpa, great-grandpa, brother, uncle, and friend. Calling hours with be held from 5 until 7pm on Wednesday, August 10, 2022 in the Philbin-Comeau Funeral Home, 176 Water Street, Clinton. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10am on Thursday August 11, 2022 at St. John the Evangelist Church, 80 Union St., Clinton, with burial to follow in St. John's Cemetery, Lancaster.
