MARVIN ACKERS Obituary

MARVIN ACKERS 06/04/1937 - 02/13/2025 Dodge City-Marvin Ackers, 87, died February 13, 2025 at Saint Catherine Hospital in Dodge City. He was born in Liberal, Kansas on June 4, 1937 to Leo and Mabel (Hostetler) Ackers. The family moved from Kansas to the San Francisco area in 1941, where Leo helped to rebuild the Pacific Fleet as shipwright, after Pearl Harbor. As a child Marvin loved to hike and camp and bicycle in the California wilderness with his brothers and their good friend Charles Caton. One of his favorite things to do was to visit a park facility in Oakland at Lake Merrit which had an " animal library". It was an educational parks and recreation program that taught children all about different types of animals, what they needed and how to treat them. It was here that he developed his great love of animals. Marvin attended school in Oakland and in Berkeley, California. He developed a serious illness in high school that largely sidelined him for about 15 years but he put his faith in Jesus and overcame this. In 1967, Marvin and his parents moved to be Baltimore, Maryland to be closer to Frank and Gary Ackers and Gary's family including his wife Naomi and his children Lisa and Sandy. Marvin worked various jobs there. In 1980 the family moved back to Dodge City when Leo's sister Corinne died. Here Marvin studied at the Dodge City Community College where he enjoyed furthering his education in math. He held various jobs including one as a custodian at USD 443. Marvin enjoyed the outdoors and collecting guns and knives and he was an avid Chess player. For Marvin, the most important part of his life was his faith in God and his church community. He participated in church life and talked to people about God. Marvin and his family have always been members of the Church of Christ. Marvin Ackers is survived by his brother Frank Ackers, his nieces and nephew: Lisa, Sandy and Keith Ackers and also his great niece and nephew: Anna and Owen Ackers. He is predecesed by his parents, Leo and Mabel Ackers and by his brother, Dr. Gary K. Ackers. A memorial service will be held at the Church of Christ in Dodge City on Saturday, June 28, 2025 at 10:00A.M. There is no viewing as cremation has taken place. Memorials are suggested to the church in care of Swaim Funeral Chapel. Thoughts and memories may be shared in the online guest book at www.swaimfuneralhome.com.
