Marvin Matherne Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 13, 2018.
Marvin Louis Matherne, Jr., died suddenly on November 7, 2018, at age 54, with his husband and family at his side.

Born in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Marvin was the older of two children of Marvin and Judith Matherne. He was preceded in death by his father, Marvin Louis Matherne, Sr.

Marvin attended Redemptorist High School in Baton Rouge and Southeastern University in Hammond, Louisiana. He was a deputy with the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Office prior to moving to Dallas in 1997. A jack of all trades, Marvin also worked for an internet service provider, a mortgage firm, and a medical practice.

Marvin is survived by his husband Dr. Scott Bartels, of Dallas; mother Judith Matherne of Rockwall; sister Megan and her husband Clint Howie, and their children, Kendall, Carter, and Quinn, of Rockwall; Bud and Sherma Bartels, of Houston; Steven Bartels and Rene Canales of Manchaca, Texas; Greg and Kelley Bartels, and their children, Brayden and Cash, of Houston. He is preceded in death by his English mastiff, Savannah.

Known to his many friends locally and internationally by his call sign, "KE5RRR," Marvin was an active member of Dallas Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Service, the Mesquite Radio Club, and the American Radio Relay League.

Marvin enjoyed walking his dog, Vieux, several times a day through his Oak Lawn neighborhood. He enjoyed music, swimming, watching soccer, and Porsches. He was an excellent cook and gardener. He was an avid fisherman who loved the Louisiana lakes and bayous and the Alabama Gulf Coast.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, November 17, 2018, at 3 p.m. at First Christian Church, 3375 Ridge Road, in Rockwall.

We miss him tremendously. He was a great friend, a manny to my daughters, a fairly frequent guest that enjoyed crawfish boils and other meals with us in Plano. Scott, thank you for calling me that day, and I wish you well ! Stay in touch.
