Mrs. Mary Akers of Dickerson Hollow in the Pleasant Shade Community departed this life at the Highpoint Health - Sumner Regional Medical Center in Gallatin August 9, 2025.
Visitation will be on August 23, 2025 from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Chapel Hill United Methodist Church, 92 Beasley Road, Riddleton, Tennessee with services starting at 3:00 p.m.
Born Mary Sue Fitzerald in Brighton, Michigan on September 23, 1948, she spent a portion of her life in Decatur, Tennessee and in River Rouge, Michigan, a suburb of Detroit.
She was a 1966 graduate of River Rouge High School and a member of United Methodist Church.
Her parents McCoy Fitzgerald and Anna Jolley Fitzgerald, preceded her in death, as did four of her siblings, Loretta Gibbs, Mike Fitzgerald, Shirley Jolley Knipp, and Roger K. Fitzgerald.
On May 31, 1966 Mary was united in marriage to Donaldson (Don) Akers and in 1973, they moved to Tennessee, where she and her husband co-owned the Salty Dog Saloon in Nashville, Tennessee, Akers Music store in Hendersonville, Tennessee, and NSI Design in Carthage, Tennessee, a very successful screen printing and embroidery business.
She also worked at the Main office of Citizens Bank in Carthage. Don preceded her in death on November 3, 2007 following forty-one years of marriage.
Mary was known for her grace, impeccable style and sharp wit. She loved music and played the bass guitar and sang, often entertaining friends and family with her talents. Mary also enjoyed reading, especially a good mystery novel or history, playing hostess for family celebrations and game nights with friends, and cuddling up with her Miniature Schnauzer, Baron.
She is survived by nieces and nephews, Tom Keefer and wife Kathy, Laura Fitzgerald, Julie Fitzgerald Thacker, Bill Fitzgerald and wife Maria, Michael Fitzgerald; brother-in-law Phillip Gibbs, sisters-in-law Jean Hall and Mary Fitzgerald and her son Daniel DaCosta, and many loving relatives and friends.
