Mary Anderson Obituary

Mary Gail Anderson, 84, of Lake Forest was called home by Our Lord and Savior on June 20, 2023. Gail was born on July 17, 1938 to Arthur and Elaine Gansberg. She spent her life in Lake Forest, graduating from Lake Forest High School in 1956. She began her college studies at Marquette University to become a dental hygienist, but she was called to teaching, so she transferred to Lake Forest College to finish her studies there. Gail was preceded in death by her parents and her brother Bob Gansberg. She is survived by her son, Steve (Valerie) of Winnetka; her sister, Karen Galiger (Jerry) of Winston Salem, NC; her grandsons Tyler and Preston; two nephews, two nieces and six great-nephews. Gail was a life-long teacher. In her early career, she worked in Japan at a US Army base teaching English to the children of the service members. She returned to Lake Forest and taught third and fourth grade in the Lake Bluff school system for over thirty years. She was a longtime member of the Delta Kappa Gamma professional society for women educators. Her friends and family were her greatest source of joy. With a wonderful group of friends that had been together for many years, Gail enjoyed attending plays, concerts, movies and even the occasional cultural trip to downtown Chicago. She was a die-hard Chicago Cubs fan and always had the game on the television during the season. Her most cherished role, however, was as grandmother to Tyler and Preston. She babysat, took them on trips to the Jelly Belly factory, and attended many sporting events and band concerts over the years. She relished every holiday, celebration, and family meal. Gail will be remembered as a storyteller, for her kind nature, and for her expansive collection of angels. She possessed a deep faith and love of God. Visitation at Church of St. Mary, 175 E. Illinois Road, Lake Forest, from 11 AM until the time of the Funeral Mass at 11:30 AM, on Thursday, July 6, 2023. Interment will be private. We will miss her dearly. So sorry to learn of the passing of our neighbor of over 40 years. May she rest in peace.

Mrs. Anderson was probably my favorite teacher in grade school. In fourth grade we learned a lot about Russia which got me fascinated by the country (if I recall, she visited there?), and a project she assigned on Mesopotamia (I think all kids got different countries) kicked off my lifelong love of ancient history. Not many people can say that kind of thing about a fourth grade teacher - what an impact! She will be greatly missed.
