Mary Bell Echols, beloved matriarch and dedicated homemaker, passed away peacefully on January 27, 2026, at the age of 102 in Commerce, Georgia. Born on February 13, 1923, in Maysville, Georgia, she was the daughter of Doc and Lillie Savage. Mary’s life was a testament to her unwavering commitment to her family and her unshakeable spirit.

Mary is remembered fondly by her surviving family, including her son Billy (Brenda) Whitfield, who cherished her guidance and wisdom throughout his life. She leaves behind a remarkable legacy through her grandchildren, Mark Whitfield, Amy Whitfield, and her great-grandchildren, Austin Whitfield, Caelan Whitfield, Grayson Whitfield, and Sarah Riggers. Additionally, Mary is survived by several nieces and nephews, all of whom carry the warmth and love she imparted.

Throughout her life, Mary experienced profound joy as well as sorrow. She was preceded in death by her first husband, HJ Whitfield, who played a significant role in her life, and her second husband, Lloyd Echols, whose companionship brought her happiness. She was also preceded by her son Horace (Sandra) Whitfield, who was deeply loved and whose memory will forever remain in the hearts of his family.

Mary cherished her siblings, and her brothers George and Tom Savage who have also passed, leaving a space in her heart that will remain unfilled. In her role as a great-grandmother, she held a special bond with her great-granddaughter Patience Whitfield, whose loss is felt deeply.

Mary's life legacy reflects strength, love, and the nurturing spirit she showed to all who knew her. She will be profoundly missed by her family and friends, but her memory and the values she instilled will continue to live on in the hearts of her loved ones.
