Mary Ann White Billings, age 92, passed away peacefully in a Columbus care center on Tuesday, May 14th. Mary was born to Cyrus Douglas and Betty Mae Everett White on January 15, 1932 in Oklahoma City, OK.
Mary was raised in Oklahoma and graduated from Tishomingo High School. She later attended and graduated from the University of Southeastern Oklahoma State in Durant, OK. In college she was a member of several organizations, including Phi Beta Kappa. On July 4, 1953 she married John Billings in Odessa, Texas. He preceded her in death on March 6, 2016. Mary loved teaching, and taught English and Language Arts to several generations of students over the years. She moved to Wharton in 1969 and taught at Dawson Elementary for many years and in the process earned her masters degree from the University of Houston. Following her retirement in 2003, she earned her certification as a Master Gardener. Mary was a proud member of the Chickasaw Indian Nation, serving as Elder.
Mary is survived by her sons, David Douglas Billings and wife, Norma of Humble, James Martin Billings and wife, Belynda of Columbus, Thomas Lee Billings and wife, Ann of Wharton and John Steven Billings and wife, Tracy of Humble, sister, Patsy Louise Prince of Bryan, grandchildren, Jennifer, Kaitlan, Amanda, Rachel, Ashlyn, John, Caroline and Sydney and great grandchildren Colsen, Campbell, Corbyn, Tucker, Owen, Silas, Ezra with one on the way.
A time for visitation will take place at the Wharton Funeral Home located at 515 E. Boling Hwy. on Monday, May 20th from 6-8 PM, and celebration of life will be held at the First Baptist Church in Wharton, TX, located at 507 Fulton St. on Tuesday, May 21st at 11 AM.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Wharton County Junior College(911 Boling Hwy Wharton Texas 77488) Mary Ann Billings Scholarship fund.
