Mary Elizabeth Blackwell, a beloved member of her family and community, passed away on September 8, 2025, in New Albany, Indiana, with her devoted family by her side. Born on February 2, 1950, in Notomine, West Virginia, Mary was a proud graduate of DuPont Manual High School.
Throughout her life, Mary embraced the role of a devoted homemaker, always going out of her way to ensure that her family was taken care of. Her love for her family was evident in all she did. She was a loyal wife, a devoted mother, a compassionate grandmother, and a cherished friend. Mary found joy in the simple pleasures of life; she enjoyed tending to her garden, watching birds, and most importantly, spending time with her family. For the past few years, Mary dedicated the majority of her time to taking care of her beloved husband, Robert Darrell Blackwell, Sr., whom she adored. Her proudest accomplishments were watching her family grow and thrive, as she nurtured connections that will carry on beyond her own.
Mary is survived by her children, Rob (Cheryl) Blackwell, Tonia (Krice) Cook, and Ryan (Gena) Blackwell, Sr., along with her loving sister, June (Don) Vincent. She was the proud grandmother of 11 grandchildren and a cherished great-grandmother to 11 great-grandchildren, who will undoubtedly carry her spirit with them in their lives.
Though she is mourned deeply, Mary is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Robert Darrell Blackwell, Sr., as well as her parents, Elsie M. Simmons and Dennis F. Simmons, Jr.
Mary's legacy of love and kindness will forever remain in the hearts of those she leaves behind. Her family invites friends and loved ones to join them in honoring her life during a Memorial Gathering at Newcomer Funeral Home, Southern Indiana in New Albany, IN, on September 13, 2025, from 12:00 PM to 3:00 PM, followed by a Celebration of Life from 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM.
