Mary Butler Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Cunningham Turch Funeral & Cremation Services - Alexandria on Jan. 14, 2026.
On January 7, 2026 Mary T. Butler, a long-time resident of Alexandria, Virginia passed away peacefully. Mary was born on October 1, 1957, in Center Moriches, Long Island, New York. Mary was a beloved daughter of the late Joseph A. Butler and the late Eileen P. (Gallagher) Butler.
Mary was the beloved wife of the late Steve Rennings; devoted mother of Brenna Butler, cherished sister of Joseph G. Butler, and his wife, Jayne, the late Catherine R. Chiaramonte and her husband, Ralph, Michael T. Butler and his wife, Jean, Margaret E. Williamson and her husband, George, Patrick J. Butler and his wife, Kelly, the late Edward J. Butler, Paul T. Butler and his wife, Jennifer, and John C. Butler and his wife, Dawn. In addition to her daughter and siblings, she is survived by 26 nephews and nieces and 9 great nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by her great nephew Henry Chiaramonte.
Mary grew up just outside of Baltimore in Woodlawn, Maryland. She was a proud graduate of Mount De Sales Academy and attended Notre Dame College of Maryland. She worked for many years at Lockheed Martin and later at the Department of Health and Human Services. For the past several years, Mary was a devoted member of the Alva Aerie of the Fraternal Order of Eagles in Alexandria, Virginia. While Mary lived in Alexandria for many years, she always remained very proud of her Baltimore roots.
Mary was so many things which makes it impossible to describe her in just a few short paragraphs. While she was extraordinarily smart and had a great sense of humour, those traits were outshone by her boundless generosity, kindness and passion for life.
Mary loved Steve and Brenna, her family, her many friends, every animal that she came across, music of almost every genre, live music and live theater, travel, books, art and so many other people and things.
Mary had a lifelong love for travel and truly saw the world, cherishing trips with family and friends alike. From adventures as near as Ocean City or the Outer Banks, and as far away as Norway, Greece, Iceland, and even a safari in South Africa, she embraced every journey. Most recently, she enjoyed a river cruise experience to Budapest and Prague this past November, always finding joy in discovering new places with the people she loved.
Mary was deeply loved by her family and friends and will be deeply missed.
The family have planned a private celebration of Mary's life. We encourage all her many friends to celebrate Mary however you knew her to enjoy life. Thanks for your love and support.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Mary's memory may be made to any organization that reflects the causes she held close to her heart - including Sweet Relief Musicians Fund or the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria.
