Mary Coger, age 79, died January 4, 2023
Mary Burton Coger was born February 18, 1943 to the late John and Elcenia Burton in Dekalb, Kemper County. Mississippi. She departed this life on January 4, 2023.
Mary was a supporting and loving Aunt, teacher, devotedChristian and community servant. She accepted Christ as her personal savior at an early age and was baptized at St. John Primitive Baptist Church, Dekalb, MS. After moving to Memphis, she became a member of St. Andrew CME Church, but later joined Parkway Garden United Presbyterian Church, where she became a dedicated worshiper and Christian Worker. She served her church in the following capacities: Deacon, Sunday School, Care Connection, Presbyterian Women andPrayer Care Ministry. She was also very active in her community.
Mary was educated in the public school system in Dekalb/Kemper County, MS. After graduating High School, she matriculated at Jackson State College in Jackson, MS where she earned her B.S. degree in Library Science. She later earned her Master's degree from Memphis State University. After completing her educations, she moved to Memphis, TN and worked as a Librarian in several schools to include Hillcrest High School in Memphis, Tennessee, as well as Dundee Elementary School in Tunica, MS and Cromwell Elementary School in Memphis, Tennessee. She ultimately retired from the Memphis City School System.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents, John and Elcenia Burton; five sisters: Annie Ruth Sibbie, Dorothy Henderson, Bernice Garrett, Addie Burton, and JonettaStidmon; two brothers: Elias (David) Burton and John Howard Burton. The family now are all with Jesus.
Mary leaves to cherish her memories, two sisters-in-law: Willodean Burton of Cedar Hill, TN and Evelyn Burton of Atlanta, GA; one brother-in-law, G.C. Sibbie of Jackson, MS; seventeen nieces and nephews and a host of great nieces, great-nephews, other relatives. She will also be remembered by numerous friends, neighbors, church family, and colleagues in the Memphis City School System.
