Mary Magdalene Cortez, 79, of Houston, Texas, passed away peacefully on September 18, 2025. She was born on February 6, 1946, in Refugio, Texas, to Marcus and Mary Elizondo. Mary married the love of her life, Herman Cortez Jr., on November 14, 1970, in their hometown of Refugio. Together, they built a life rooted in love, family, and faith. Mary dedicated 18 years of service as a secretary for the Houston Independent School District, where she was known for her warmth, professionalism, and unwavering commitment to students and staff alike. Beyond her career, Mary was a woman of deep compassion and generosity. She found joy in spending time with her family and friends, nurturing animals, and giving back to her community. Her kindness touched many lives, and her gentle spirit will be remembered by all who knew her. Mary is survived by her devoted husband, Herman Cortez; her daughters, Regina Cortez and Sharon Cortez, both of Houston; and her son, Daryl Cortez of La Porte, Texas. She also leaves behind her sisters, Terri Perez and husband Pete Perez, and Rachel Elizondo of Refugio; her brother, Chano Elizondo and wife Irma Elizondo of San Antonio; and two beloved grandchildren, her granddaughter Erin Cortez who brought her immense pride and joy. She was preceded in death by her son, Eric Cortez; her sister, Tillie Bowman; and her brother, Johnny Elizondo. Mary's legacy of love, generosity, and grace will live on in the hearts of her family and all who were fortunate enough to know her.
