Mary Kathryn Fitzpatrick Costello
Born on April 5, 1949; Mary Kathryn was raised in Norwood, attended St Gabriel's and graduated with honors from Archbishop Prendergast. She was a pioneer as a member of the first women's cohort to attend PMC College now Widener University. Mary continued to break barriers as the first ever female editor in chief of the Dome, PMC's awarding winning student newspaper. It was at PMC that she also met the love of her life, John Costello, whom she married in 1974.
Mary Kathryn lived a life of service as a beloved teacher within the Philadelphia Archdiocese, Academy Park Middle School, and Swarthmore Middle School. She approached her profession with grace, humor, compassion, and a touch of tough love. This recipe helped thousands of kids learn how to read, write, and love the English Language. Mary was also a great friend and mentor for hundreds of student teachers and colleagues, always eager to improve herself and share her vast experience and knowledge.
Mary loved the written word. Books, reading and the arts were central to her life. In her retirement, she found new passions including tai chi, classes at the local YMCA, and volunteering at St Joseph's Home.
Above all, Mary's greatest love was her family. She is survived by her devoted daughter Maureen and her husband, Zak, who were constant companions and friends. Her son John and his wife, Meghan, and grandson Sean, her pride and joy. Mary is also survived by her loving brothers, sisters-in-laws, and many nephews, nieces, great-nephews, and great-nieces who brought her much joy.
Mary's sudden passing leaves her family, friends, and neighbors with a legacy of love, family, and learning that will be deeply missed.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend Mary's Funeral on Saturday August 2, 2025 where her family will receive friends from 9:30 am until 10:30 AM at the Church of St. Madeline, Penn St. & Morton Ave., Ridley Park. Funeral Mass will immediately follow at 10:30 AM. Interment Private at the request of the family.
