Auburn, California - Sister Mary Loretta Dowd returned to the arms of God on June 23, 2021 at the retirement center for the Sisters of Mercy in Auburn. Sister Mary Loretta was born on February 26, 1924, in Dingle, County Kerry, Ireland to Patrick and Bridget Dowd. She was one of six siblings, three girls and three boys, all whom have predeceased her. Possessing a strong desire to serve those in need, she joined the Sisters of Mercy in 1952. Gifted in finance, she served in the business departments of Mercy General Hospital, Mercy Medical Center, Redding, and as a counselor for Mercy 65 Plus at Mercy San Juan Hospital, Carmichael. In later years she served as hospitality minister at Our Lady of Mercy Convent in Auburn. She was especially known for her commitment to intercessory prayer for the needs of others. A vigil service will be held at 6:30 pm on Tuesday, June 29th at the Convent of Our Lady of Mercy, 535 Sacramento Street, Auburn, CA. The funeral liturgy will take place the following morning at 10:30 a.m. at the Convent. In lieu of flowers, memorial offerings may be made in her memory to Sisters of Mercy of the Americas, 535 Sacramento Street, Auburn, CA. 95603. Arrangements by W.F. Gormley & Sons, Family Owned Since 1897, a guestbook can be found on their website.
