Mary Fleming

Mary Margaret "Marge" Fleming, age 80, passed away peacefully on August 14, 2025 in Troy, Michigan. Born on the Fourth of July, 1945, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Marge was a firecracker in spirit and heart. Her patriotic birthday was a fitting tribute to her mother, the late Frances Day (née Surgalia), a courageous nurse during World War II. Marge was raised in the close-knit community of Hayes, just outside Pittsburgh, where she attended Holy Angels grade school. In Hayes, she met a dynamic group of girlfriends (affectionately known as the Nutsy's) with whom she remained life long friends.

Her passion for teaching led her to earn a Bachelor's degree in Education from California University of Pennsylvania, where she also met her lifelong love and best friend, Robert "Bob" Fleming. Marge dedicated her professional life to nurturing young minds at Holy Child Grade School, where her patience, warmth, and a little bit of silliness, left a lasting impression on generations of students.

Outside the classroom, Marge and Bob were accomplished explorers. Together they traveled the world, making memories from Europe and Asia, to the Galapagos Islands-a favorite destination. Often joined by cousins, their trips were filled with joy, stories, and unforgettable moments.

Marge had a gift for documenting her adventures through the lens of a camera, and she and Bob became well known among friends in their photography club for their pictures of stunning landscapes. Marge would often be so invested in capturing the beauty of her surroundings, that she needed a gentle reminder to include herself in a few frames. In life's quiet moments, Marge found joy in needlework and literature.

Most of all, Marge loved her family-especially her cherished grandchildren! Marge adored spending time with her grandchildren and always looked forward to her trips to visit them. She was blessed with many vacations together with her grandkids including trips to Myrtle Beach, Disney World, Washington DC, the Virgin Islands and her cherished annual Linwood family reunion. She was also a tremendous hostess and found great joy in hosting large family gatherings with enough food to feed the neighborhood.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Pennsylvania Rails to Trails Conservancy. Bob and Marge loved walking these trails that were so near to their home. They used the trails as exercise to prepare for their many adventures.

Beloved wife of Robert for 58 years. Loving mother of Bernis Fleming Ulsh (Tim), Mary Frances Stout (Jeremy), and Sara Brady (Scott). Devoted grandmother of Bobby, Vivian, Carolyn, Maggie, and Katie.

A memorial service will be held at Holy Child Church in Bridgeville, PA on Saturday August 30, 10am. to celebrate Marge's remarkable life.
