Visitation prior to services 1 - 2 p.m. Saturday at the Schowengerdt Chapel. Burial in Oak Hill Cemetery, Butler. Contributions to Butler Public Library. Mary Ellen Gabriel, age 89 of Butler, Missouri died Tuesday, May 16, 2023 at Butler Center. She was born January 24, 1934 to Earlwirt and Gertie Tyler Wells in Liberty, Missouri.
Mary, one of four children, grew up in Weston, Missouri but spent most of her life in Butler, Missouri. She went to school in Weston and then high school in Butler. Mary retired as a nurse's aide and earlier had been a bookkeeper for MFA Feed store and the lumber yard. She was a member of the Rebekah Lodge and the Butler Saddle Club. Mary attended the First Christian Church in Butler. On November 29, 1952 she married Otis Wilson, and to this union three children were born. Later she married Truman Gabriel on April 6, 1981.
Mary was known as fun loving and a firecracker. She loved animals, reading, crocheting, gardening, horses, fishing and sewing. She enjoyed writing poems and listening to Polka music.
Mary is survived by two daughters, Louetta Dawn Wilson of Butler, Missouri and Tammie June Hedges of Blue Springs, Missouri; four grandchildren, Mike Thomas, Jerod Baker and wife Donna, William Hedges and Cotton Morris and wife Talhia; three great-grandchildren; eleven great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Tressie Robinson and husband Charles of Independence, Missouri; a brother, James Wells and wife Barbara of Blue Springs, Missouri; and several nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Truman Gabriel; a son, Shaun Tyler Wilson; a brother, Buster Wells; and a sister-in-law, Faye Wells.
