Mary Augusta Gavin, age 89, passed away on December 26, 2025. She was born in
Detroit, Michigan to parents Josephine and Edward Gavin, and was a graduate of Cooley High in Detroit.
Mary lived her life to the very fullest: having extravagant dinner parties, organizing sailing trips to the Virgin Islands, playing tennis and golf, and she was an avid ballroom dancer, even into her 80's. She was still glamorous to a fault in her old age: even fighting to wear high heels whilst using a walker.
She had a number of interesting careers in her lifetime: she ran the Godiva Chocolates cart in the Renaissance Center when it first opened, next she sold advertising for Group W Cable and then, for the Dearborn Press & Guide. Later, she liked to call herself a "Garbage Woman" (she actually sold commercial garbage pickup) but following that, she started her own business: a medical transportation company called "Someone Waiting", and that was her life's great passion. Many of her clients became her friends, and she often took care of the elderly ones that didn't have families of their own. She liked to say she was lucky because she "had a hundred grandparents". She worked running Someone Waiting until she was 82 years old. It was also very important to her to give back to her community, and she volunteered for different agencies throughout her life. She served on the board of Crawford-Armstrong Handicapped Association, which organized boat trips for mentally handicapped individuals and their caregivers.
Mary was married and divorced twice and remained good friends with both men, who predeceased her: Roy Metelski and Peter Mischung. She is survived by her two daughters, Michelle Metelski and Marla Metelski, Marla's partner, Rick Mills, her (former, but much beloved) daughter-in-law, Linnea Nani, and her granddaughter, Miranda (Benjamin) Giovanitti. She had two stepchildren that were also predeceased: Scott Metelski and Lynn Mischung.
A memorial gathering will be held at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 1368 Crooks Rd, Clawson, on Sunday, January 11, 2026, from 2pm- 5pm, with a service at 5:00pm. Mary's cremated remains will be interred at Glen Eden Cemetery in Livonia privately the following day.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Turning Point Macomb honoring Mary's generous spirit and her lifelong commitment to serving others. https://turningpointmacomb.org/
