Michael F. Gavin

Rutland- Michael F. Gavin, 84, passed away peacefully on the evening of March 17, 2026, at the Pines at Rutland Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation.

He was born on November 24, 1941, in Windsor, Vt to Joseph E. and Nellie P. (Daudelin) Gavin.

Michael received his early education in the Windsor, VT public schools. He graduated from Windsor High School in 1960 and from Castleton State College in 1965 with a BS degree in English and Social Studies.

He taught English in VT, MA and ME schools. While employed at the West Peru, ME elementary school, he served as an English teacher and acting principal. His last teaching position was at Christ the King School in Rutland. He was under the administration of Sr. St. Michael.

After retiring, he did volunteer work for Rutland Mental Health Services. He served on the RMHS Board of directors from 2002 -2016. He served on the Adult Standing Committee for many years and conducted reading groups for adult clients.

Michael enjoyed exploring many fields of study from the College of St. Joseph, Castleton State College, Lavern College and NYU. He was a member of the Association of Marian Helpers (Stockbridge, MA), which he considered a gift. In 2024, Michael was given special recognition for being a dedicated Marian Helper.

Michael was predeceased by his parents, two brothers, Joseph E. Gavin, Jr. and David J. Gavin, and stepfather Edgar Estey. Survivors include his sister Rebecca J. Estey Alsop, cousins Lorraine (Don)Carroll, Margaret (Alan) Farwell, Cathy Hebert, John Quigley, nieces Mary (Bert)Elkins and Barb (Bruce)Perrotte, and best friend Peter LaFlamme.

Per Michael's wishes there will not be a formal funeral. Rather, on Wednesday, March 25, 2026, friends may call from 4-5 PM at the Aldous Funeral Home, 44 North Main Street, Rutland. Prayers will be offered by the priest at 5:00PM. Following that, anyone who wishes to do so may share memories of Michael.

Michael's family wishes to express deepest gratitude to the Foley Cancer Center, RRMC, VNA and Hospice, and the Pines for the care, compassion, and respect that was given to him during this most difficult stage of his life.
