Maria Lopez Gomez, "Mary Gomez" of Wharton, passed away on December 27, 2023, at the age of 64. Mary was born January 27, 1959, to Roberto and Manuela Palacios Lopez in El Campo, TX.
She married Miguel "Mike" Gomez, Jr. on January 29, 1977, in Wharton at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church. He preceded her in death on July 27, 2020. She enjoyed spoiling her grandchildren, cooking, entertaining, going to the movies and on short road trips, flowers, puzzles, shopping sewing and listening to and dancing to good music. Mary was seamstress most of her life, sewing many dresses for quiceneras and weddings, and special events. She worked as a caregiver for most of her life at an assisted living center here in Wharton, where she was just awarded employee of the year.
Mary is survived by her loving children, Joanne Gomez of Wharton, and Michael Gomez and wife, Megan of East Bernard, sisters, Christina Espinosa and partner Jesus Olivares of Victoria, Gracie Rodriguez and partner Albert Tijerina of Wharton, and Patty Gonzales of Wharton, brothers, Robert Lopez, Jr. and wife, Brenda and Albert Lopez and wife, Julie both of El Campo, her grandchildren, Erik Gomez DeLeon, Kylee Gomez, Kyler Gomez, Rhenna Eide and Jacob Edie.
Visitation for Mary will be held on Thursday, January 4, 2024, at the Chapel of Wharton Funeral Home after 5pm with Rosary recited at 7pm. Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday, January 5, 2024 at 10 am at Holy Family Catholic Church in Wharton with Fr. Antonio Perez officiating. Burial will be in the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery in Wharton.
Funeral services are under the direction of Wharton Funeral Home and condolences may be sent to the family online at whartonfuneralhome.com.
